Microsoft has officially unveiled Age of Empires IV: Raiders of the North, the latest expansion for the strategy game, during the Xbox Games Showcase.

Developed by World’s Edge and Relic Entertainment, the expansion introduces two new civilizations, the Vikings and the Scots, alongside fresh missions and battlefields. Raiders of the North is set to launch in Autumn 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.

The Vikings arrive as a fast and aggressive civilization built around raiding and mobility. Their strengths include powerful melee infantry, early naval superiority, and an economy centred on the Longhouse. As matches progress, their culture evolves from pagan traditions into emerging kingdoms, unlocking knights and trained militias. Players can also benefit from heroic Sagas, which provide long-term bonuses throughout a campaign.

The Scots, meanwhile, take a more defensive approach. Their armies focus on disciplined infantry and strong fortifications, supported by a unique food economy based on Highland cattle and fishponds. Players can customise their military strategy using the Mustering Hall, choosing between Highland and Lowland specialisations depending on the situation.

Beyond the two new factions, Raiders of the North introduces four new Crucible missions. These scenarios are designed to challenge players with unique objectives and combat encounters. Two additional biomes are also being added, providing new environments and battlefields for players to conquer.

The official trailer also teased new gameplay systems coming with the expansion, though Microsoft’s announcement focused primarily on the civilizations and mission content.

The addition of the Vikings feels particularly fitting for Age of Empires IV, given how heavily previous entries leaned into medieval history and warfare. The Scots, with their emphasis on defence and economy, should provide a strong contrast and offer players a different style of strategy.

Age of Empires IV: Raiders of the North launches in Fall 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and PlayStation 5.
