Key Highlights:

  • Kingdom Hearts IV is now scheduled for late 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
  • A new D23 trailer reveals a world inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Coco.
  • An extended version shown at D23 confirms that Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy will be playable while searching for Sora.

Kingdom Hearts IV now has a late 2027 release window, giving Square Enix’s long-awaited sequel its first confirmed launch timeframe.

Disney revealed the window during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event alongside a new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer. The footage introduces a vibrant world inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Coco, expanding the list of confirmed settings beyond the realistic Quadratum material shown previously.

The game will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Disney also says Kingdom Hearts IV is now available to wishlist.

The public D23 trailer was not the only footage shown during the event.

Attendees at the separate DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS panel saw an extended version of the trailer. That version confirmed players will be able to control Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as they search for information about Sora’s whereabouts.

That detail represents a notable shift in perspective for Kingdom Hearts IV. Sora remains central to the story, but Disney’s wording confirms that the search for him will include playable sequences involving the wider trio rather than restricting control entirely to Sora.

I think the playable Mickey, Donald and Goofy reveal is arguably more important than the Coco setting alone because it tells us something concrete about how Kingdom Hearts IV will structure parts of its story, not just where one section takes place.

The D23 announcement follows Kingdom Hearts IV’s first major gameplay reveal in four years, which arrived during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. That trailer brought Sora back into the spotlight and confirmed the same four-platform release, but Square Enix stopped short of giving the game a release window at the time.

The June footage focused heavily on Quadratum and Sora’s combat against a Darkside Heartless. D23 now moves the game’s confirmed state forward in three separate ways: a late 2027 window, the Coco-inspired world, and playable Mickey, Donald and Goofy sequences.

Disney’s D23 panel also marked the beginning of the Kingdom Hearts 25th anniversary celebration. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue appeared alongside Disney & Pixar Games to discuss the franchise’s history and its approach to adapting Disney and Pixar worlds.

Kingdom Hearts IV is currently planned for release in late 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
