The showcase offered fans their best look yet at the long-awaited sequel, confirming that Sora, Donald, and Goofy will return when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Square Enix originally unveiled Kingdom Hearts 4 in 2022 during the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Since then, updates have been scarce, leading many fans to wonder when the next chapter would reappear. Nintendo answered that question with one of the biggest surprises of the Direct.

The new footage revisits the realistic city of Quadratum, first seen in the original reveal, and once again shows Sora battling a massive Darkside Heartless. However, this latest trailer provided a much closer look at the game’s combat, giving players an idea of how moment-to-moment action has evolved.

Several familiar faces also make brief appearances, including the return of Xehanort. Although the trailer continues the events teased in 2022, Square Enix stopped short of announcing a release window.

Fans who skipped the series’ mobile titles may have some catching up to do before jumping into the next adventure, as Kingdom Hearts’ increasingly complex story continues to build on years of lore.

The Direct also brought news for players wanting to revisit previous entries. The new Kingdom Hearts Collection launches on October 8 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The bundle includes:

  1. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX
  2. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
  3. Kingdom Hearts III with the Re Mind expansion

Each title will also be sold separately. Meanwhile, a demo for Kingdom Hearts IV is available now on the Nintendo eShop.

The timing of the reveal comes as something of a relief for longtime fans. In the four years since Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced, games like Persona 6 and The Wolf Among Us 2 have resurfaced with new trailers and release windows, while Square Enix largely remained quiet on Sora’s next adventure.

Still, history suggests patience is part of the package. Nearly six years separated the announcement and release of Kingdom Hearts III, and with Square Enix’s Creative Studio 1 also overseeing the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, the lengthy wait for Kingdom Hearts 4 may simply be business as usual.

For now, at least, fans finally have fresh footage to analyse, and proof that the next chapter of Sora’s journey is very much alive.
