Key Highlights:
- Mega Man: Dual Override will feature Proto Man as a second playable character with his own abilities and playstyle.
- New Robot Master Twinkle Girl is one of eight new bosses, while returning Mega Man 8 Robot Master Astro Man also appears.
- Custom Chips can provide abilities including rapid-fire shots, hovering and shields, while the Override system temporarily pushes robots beyond their normal limits.
Capcom has revealed the first extended gameplay for Mega Man: Dual Override, confirming Proto Man as a second playable character alongside Mega Man and introducing new Robot Master Twinkle Girl.
The Gamescom Opening Night Live trailer also provides the first proper explanation of the Override system that gives the game its name. Players can temporarily remove a robot’s limiter to access much greater power, but using Override carries a penalty once the effect ends. Mega Man temporarily loses performance across several abilities after pushing beyond his normal limits.
That creates a risk-and-reward system rather than a straightforward temporary power boost. Players will need to decide when the extra power is worth the period of reduced capability that follows.
Mega Man and Proto Man can also be modified using Custom Chips. Capcom has shown chips providing rapid-fire Mega Buster shots, a protective bubble shield and the ability to hover. Different chips can be combined, allowing both characters’ abilities to be customised around different playstyles.
I think the combination of Custom Chips and Override is the most important gameplay reveal because it adds both persistent build choice and a temporary risk-reward mechanic without replacing Mega Man’s traditional Robot Master weapon system.
Defeating Robot Masters will still provide Special Weapons. One weapon shown during the trailer produces a powerful charge attack that can also propel Mega Man through the air, effectively giving the weapon both offensive and traversal uses. Special Weapons continue to consume their own energy when activated.
The trailer introduces Twinkle Girl, one of eight new Robot Masters planned for Dual Override. Capcom describes her as an entertainer whose enthusiasm for a nighttime performance spirals out of control, causing her to attack using firework-themed abilities. Mega Man is shown confronting her during a colourful stage built around her pyrotechnic theme.
Her reveal also connects to something Capcom established earlier in development.
The publisher received roughly 10,000 submissions for its Mega Man: Dual Override Robot Master Design Contest. Twenty designs advanced before fan voting reduced the field to six finalists. Capcom previously confirmed that one winning fan-created Robot Master would be implemented into the finished game alongside seven other new Robot Masters, establishing the eight-boss structure before Twinkle Girl was formally introduced.
Capcom has not yet announced which of the six finalist designs will become that eighth Robot Master.
Dual Override will not limit its boss roster to newcomers either. Astro Man appears during the Gamescom footage, marking the return of the Robot Master originally introduced in Mega Man 8. Capcom has deliberately questioned whether additional classic Robot Masters could also return, although no others have yet been confirmed.
Proto Man’s appearance is more substantial than the final shot of the trailer initially suggests. Capcom has confirmed that Mega Man’s brother is a fully playable second hero, with his own abilities and a distinct playstyle rather than functioning solely as a story character. Both Mega Man and Proto Man can use the Custom Chip system.
Proto Man had actually been teased months before his Gamescom reveal. When Capcom announced Dual Override at The Game Awards 2025, its PlayStation Blog recap specifically drew attention to a familiar whistle heard at the end of the original reveal trailer. The Gamescom announcement now closes that teaser by confirming his playable role.
The story takes place during a Robot Exhibition that descends into chaos while Dr. Light is absent. Robots begin running rampant across the city, leaving Mega Man and Proto Man to investigate the incident and discover what caused it.
That premise also explains why both new and returning Robot Masters can appear within the same adventure without the trailer establishing them simply as another collection of Dr. Wily creations.
Mega Man is becoming increasingly visible outside his own series as Dual Override approaches. The character recently joined Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, where Epic Games introduced Mega Man alongside a Mega Buster-inspired Battle Royale weapon.
Dual Override itself marks the twelfth mainline entry in the classic Mega Man series and the first new numbered-era adventure since Mega Man 11 launched in October 2018. Its planned 2027 release will also coincide with the franchise’s 40th anniversary, following the original Mega Man’s debut in 1987.
Mega Man: Dual Override is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC in 2027. The PC version will be distributed through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Microsoft’s Xbox PC ecosystem, while the game is already available to wishlist on several storefronts.
