Key Highlights:
- Mortal Shell 2’s Week 1 Update adds Fragile Tarstones, new Beacons, revised dungeon rewards and a new way to reset a Shell.
- Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite, allowing every Shell and Tarstone to be upgraded during a single playthrough.
- Riposte damage now scales with enemy health, while save protection, performance, bosses, weapons and enemy behaviour have also been improved.
Mortal Shell 2 has received its first major post-launch update, introducing new items, progression changes, additional Beacons and a substantial overhaul of ripostes just over a week after release.
Cold Symmetry released the Week 1 Update for PC on 29 August 2026, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions set to follow shortly. The patch expands on the smaller balance update released around launch and combines new content with combat, performance, stability and exploration fixes.
One of the biggest changes affects progression. Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite resources, meaning players can eventually upgrade every Shell and Tarstone within the same playthrough instead of permanently dividing a limited supply between different builds.
Cold Symmetry has also introduced Mether’s Severance, a new respec item that can be given to Zhirelle. Using it resets a selected Shell and refunds all Glimpses previously invested into that Shell. Tarstones and Mether’s Severance can also become available from Merrick and periodically restock as players progress.
I think removing the finite progression economy could prove to be the update’s most important change because it gives players considerably more freedom to experiment with Mortal Shell 2’s different Shells without permanently compromising another build.
The update introduces Fragile Tarstones as a new Tarstone class. These items lose durability before eventually breaking, at which point they also produce a Tarcore. Existing Justicar’s Stone and Gloombound Stone copies have been converted into Fragile Tarstones with stronger passive effects and new effects when they break.
Two additional items offer more specialised benefits. Glimpse Stone gradually wears down as enemies are defeated before breaking into Glimpses, while Egon’s Stone can revive the Harbinger at a dungeon entrance in exchange for durability. If Egon’s Stone breaks during that death, the player also keeps their Gloom.
Exploration has been adjusted across Fainweald and Mammon, where additional Beacons have appeared. These new Beacons only operate during the daytime.
Players still getting accustomed to the world can also use our Mortal Shell 2 beginner tips guide, which covers Fainweald, Mammon, early Shells, dungeon tracking and several systems affected by the update.
Dungeon rewards across the first two regions have also been revised, missing arena dungeon rewards have been restored and some troublesome chests have been replaced or reset. A teleporter now appears after one Grisha pit encounter, removing the need to repeat the journey back through that particular dungeon. Two cosmetic headpieces can also be discovered after completing specific questlines.
Ripostes have received a wider mechanical overhaul. Player riposte damage now scales against enemy health, allowing the attack to remain effective during the late game, New Game Plus and Night Mode rather than falling behind tougher enemies.
Riposte invulnerability now lasts consistently until each animation finishes, while several recovery animations have been shortened so players regain control sooner. Damage is also calculated by the riposte itself, fixing situations where damage could previously be applied twice or fail to register altogether.
Cold Symmetry has additionally restricted maximum enemy tracking and magnetism, retuned aggression and disengagement behaviour and corrected several projectile and hit-detection problems.
Weapons received another balance pass. The Obsidian Hammer now deals substantially more damage, the Great Martyr’s Blade has been strengthened and heavy weapons have received broader damage and poise adjustments. Axatana’s weapon ability now grants invulnerability frames and applies Fragile stacks, while several individual Tarstone and weapon interactions have been fixed.
Bosses have also been extensively revised. The Monolith received adjustments to attack timing, hitboxes and an issue capable of causing double damage, while encounters including Zmey, The Lost Child, Droeg and Hexapod received fixes covering attacks, navigation, animations and arena behaviour.
The Week 1 Update addresses several more serious technical problems as well. Cold Symmetry says interrupted saves can no longer destroy an entire save file because save data is now written in a way designed to survive crashes or sudden shutdowns. Numerous locations capable of trapping players have also been repaired.
Performance work includes reducing enemy density in particularly expensive areas, moving some work that caused a post-shader-compilation hitch into the menu, optimising dungeon lighting and reducing background processing associated with weapons, movement and hit detection. Frame generation has also been reworked, while NVIDIA frame generation can now be selected across a wider range of compatible graphics cards.
Switch Pro and Switch Pro 2 controllers are now supported on PC, complete with an option to swap their button glyphs, while Steam Deck and Steam Controller inputs should display the correct buttons.
The update arrives after Mortal Shell 2 launched worldwide on 20 August. Cold Symmetry had already said further balancing and feature updates were planned, including additional work involving Night Mode and Tarstones, making the Week 1 Update the first major step in that post-launch support.
