Key Highlights:

  • Jin Sakai returns as one of four playable characters in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted.
  • Jin retains all four of his original combat stances alongside familiar abilities including Dance of Wrath and Ghost Stance.
  • Most Wanted arrives on 1 October alongside the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion.

I have been waiting for Ghost of Yōtei to give me the final push I needed to buy it.

Ghost of Tsushima remains one of my favourite games, and Jin Sakai is easily one of my favourite characters. His story was heartbreaking at times, but the beautiful world Sucker Punch built around it has stuck with me years later.

Despite that, I hadn’t quite been able to convince myself to pay full price for Yōtei.

Apparently, Sucker Punch has now discovered my weakness: bring Jin Sakai back.

Revealed during the latest State of Play, Jin will return as a playable character in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted, a new single-player combat survival mode arriving on 1st October.

Sucker Punch hasn’t simply brought Jin back as a familiar face.

The studio’s character and animation teams have updated his Ghost of Tsushima model for Yōtei while retaining his original appearance and fighting style.

Jin uses his katana alongside all four original combat stances, allowing players to adapt their approach to different enemies. He also starts with a Sticky Bomb and hankyu.

His Ultimate is Dance of Wrath, while his Kill Streak activates Ghost Stance, terrifying nearby enemies and allowing Jin to quickly dispatch a limited number of them.

For anyone who spent enough time switching between Jin’s stances in Tsushima for it to become muscle memory, his Most Wanted setup should feel very familiar.

Most Wanted is Sucker Punch’s take on a roguelike, built around the combat systems already established in Ghost of Yōtei.

Players select a character and accept bounties of escalating difficulty against members of the Yōtei Six. Each run includes waves of enemies and minibosses, with new perks becoming available along the way before the final bounty target. Completed bounties can then be replayed at higher difficulties, eventually leading to the toughest bounty against Lord Saito.

Runs also award Mon, which can be spent outside them on permanent progression including techniques, weapon upgrades, charms and character unlocks.

Four characters can eventually be unlocked: Atsu, Oyuki, Nagato and Jin Sakai. Each begins with a katana but has different weapons and abilities designed around their individual fighting styles.

Perks add another layer to those builds, covering areas including weapon mastery, equipment, summons, parrying and survivability.

That makes Jin’s return considerably more interesting than a simple cameo. Players are actually being given his familiar combat toolkit and the freedom to build around it.

Most Wanted isn’t the only addition arriving on 1st October.

The previously announced Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara is a new narrative expansion split between two periods of Atsu’s life: her involvement in the Battle of Sekigahara and events in the present day involving Nagato and the Vipers.

It introduces the previously unseen Ashoro Foothills alongside new enemies, heavy weapons, abilities, Mythic Tales, armour and cosmetics.

Both additions form part of Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, while existing owners can access them through the Complete Edition Upgrade. A free October update will also add Beauty of Yōtei, additional Watanabe Mode music, armour appearance customisation and a high-contrast accessibility option.

For me, Jin is the part of this announcement that changes things.

I loved Ghost of Tsushima, but I hadn’t been completely sold on buying Ghost of Yōtei at full price. Moving into another Ghost story without Jin was always going to feel different when his journey was such a huge part of what made the original game special to me.

I can apparently be bought with one returning samurai.

Seeing Jin retain his stances, Dance of Wrath and Ghost Stance makes Most Wanted feel less like a nostalgic cameo and more like a genuine opportunity to play as the character I remember.

Sucker Punch may have finally given me the reason I needed to make the trip to Yōtei.

Now I just need to explain the purchase.
