What Is Blueprint Building in Sons of the Forest?

Blueprint building in Sons of the Forest is a construction system that lets players place a predefined structure outline and complete it by adding the required materials. The blueprint determines the structure’s design, dimensions, and material requirements before construction begins.

Unlike custom building, blueprint building does not require players to position individual logs or design the structure themselves. The player chooses a finished design, places its outline in the world, and supplies the resources shown on its checklist.

How Does Blueprint Building Work?

Players access blueprint building through the Guide Book. The book contains predefined structures such as shelters, storage containers, furniture, traps, and utility objects.

After selecting a structure, the player positions a translucent outline on suitable terrain. The outline turns red when the structure cannot be placed because the area is blocked, uneven, or otherwise unsuitable.

Once placed, the blueprint remains in the world until the structure is completed or cancelled. Players add materials directly to the outline, and the resource checklist updates as each required item is supplied.

Construction does not need to be completed immediately. Players can leave an unfinished blueprint in place, gather more resources, and return later.

What Is the Difference Between Blueprint Building and Custom Building?

Blueprint building uses fixed designs, while custom building lets players construct structures from individual materials.

A blueprint controls the finished shape of a shelter, storage rack, trap, or other object. The player cannot freely change its dimensions or rearrange its individual components.

Custom building gives the player more control over foundations, walls, floors, roofs, and other structural elements. Logs can be placed, cut, and connected in different ways to produce original buildings.

The two systems serve different purposes. Blueprint building prioritises speed, consistency, and clear material requirements. Custom building prioritises freedom and manual construction.

What Structures Use Blueprint Building?

Blueprint building covers many objects that support shelter, storage, defence, decoration, and survival. These include ready-made shelters, drying racks, log holders, furniture, traps, and other utility structures.

Some objects can only be created from predefined plans. Players cannot reproduce every storage item, trap, machine, or decorative object through custom log placement.

Blueprint building therefore remains useful even for players who construct most of their base manually. The system provides specialised objects that support the wider base.

Can Players Place Multiple Blueprints?

Players can place multiple blueprint outlines before completing them. Each outline keeps its own material checklist and remains at its chosen location.

This allows players to plan several parts of a base in advance. A player can place outlines for storage, shelter, and defensive structures before collecting all the required resources.

Blueprints can then be completed in any order. Construction can continue alongside exploration, combat, and resource gathering instead of requiring one uninterrupted building session.

What Are Collectible Blueprints?

Collectible blueprints are plans found at specific locations across the island. Each collected blueprint adds another buildable object to the Guide Book.

These discoveries are separate from the standard prefab plans available near the beginning of the game. Collectible blueprints unlock specialised structures, including traps, decorative furniture, powered devices, and late-game utility objects.

Sons of the Forest contains 16 collectible blueprints. Finding all 16 expands the player’s construction catalogue and contributes to the Interior Designer achievement.

Collectible blueprints connect building progression to exploration. Players gain access to more advanced structures by searching caves, abandoned buildings, camps, and other locations around the island.

Why Is Blueprint Building Useful?

Blueprint building gives players an exact material target before construction starts. The visible checklist shows which resources the structure needs and how many remain.

The fixed outline also reduces the risk of construction mistakes. Players do not need to understand every rule of the custom building system before creating functional shelters, storage, traps, or furniture.

I find blueprint building most useful when I treat the outline as the plan and the resource checklist as the construction process. The system shifts the challenge away from positioning every component and towards gathering the correct materials.

Blueprint building functions as the structured counterpart to custom building in Sons of the Forest. It provides predictable designs, clear resource requirements, and access to specialised structures while custom building handles freeform architectural work.
