Sony Ends PlayStation 2 Production After 13-Year Legacy
It was inevitable, but now it’s official – Sony has ceased PlayStation 2 production worldwide, marking the end of an era for one of the most successful gaming consoles in history. Launched in March 2000, the PS2 enjoyed a record-breaking lifespan, selling over 150 million units globally and securing its place as the best-selling home console of all time.
The PlayStation 2 revolutionised gaming, introducing DVD playback, online connectivity, and an extensive library of over 3,800 games. For many players, it was their gateway to gaming, setting the foundation for the modern gaming industry. It was the first console to earn a widely recognised short nickname as well with many people calling it the PS2.
There will no doubt be PS2’s still around the world for many hundreds of years to come. Even if they do become antiques, because there are still a lot of people that like to play the classic games that are on the system.
Classic titles like the first four Tomb Raider games, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil and many more. Sony have said that they will continue to produce PS2 video games for the future though. So it is not all bad news for PlayStation 2 lovers.
One of the reasons for this announcement is most probably the long awaited release of the PlayStation 4 machine. We all know that Sony Computer Entertainment are working on the new console. For now though, it is an end of an era for the iconic PS2.
