Key Highlights:

  • Bombermine appeared online in February 2013 as an unofficial browser game heavily inspired by Bomberman.
  • The multiplayer game supported as many as 1,000 players simultaneously on a single map.
  • Bombermine was later reworked under the Game of Bombs name rather than remaining a conventional Bomberman release.

An unofficial take on Bomberman attracted attention online in February 2013 when Bombermine brought massive multiplayer bomb battles directly into web browsers.

The core idea closely followed the classic Bomberman formula. Players moved around a grid-based arena, placed bombs, destroyed blocks and collected power-ups that increased attributes such as movement speed, bomb capacity and explosion range.

What made Bombermine unusual was its scale. Instead of the small multiplayer matches traditionally associated with Bomberman, a single server could support as many as 1,000 players fighting across one enormous map.

No installation was required. Players could enter through a compatible browser, choose a name and immediately join one of the active servers.

Matches ran for a limited period rather than ending permanently when a player was eliminated, allowing participants to respawn and continue competing while collecting bonuses and trying to defeat other players.

Bombermine was an independent fan-made project rather than an official Konami or Hudson release. The project later evolved into Game of Bombs, retaining the large-scale multiplayer concept under a new identity.

The browser game’s emphasis on free multiplayer also placed it alongside other unusual online games GLN was highlighting in 2013, including a selection of five free games that ranged from browser projects to League of Legends.
