Xbox 720 Release Date Rumours

Xbox One Revealed

The rumour mill was buzzing with speculation about Microsoft’s next-generation console, initially dubbed the “Xbox 720.” However, Microsoft did indeed officially unveiled their new console as the Xbox One, putting an end to the speculation.

While early rumours suggested a reveal at the end of April, Microsoft ultimately announced the Xbox One at a special press event on May 21, 2013. This announcement came after Sony had already revealed their PlayStation 4 earlier that year.

The Xbox One was indeed released in November 2013, specifically on November 22nd in North America and several European markets. This release date aligned with the holiday shopping season and put it in direct competition with Sony’s PlayStation 4, which launched on November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe.

At launch, the Xbox One was priced at $499 in the United States, £429 in the UK, and €499 in European markets. This pricing was slightly higher than initially rumoured, and also higher than the PlayStation 4’s launch price of $399.

The console launched with several high-profile titles, including “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag” and “Battlefield 4,” as predicted. However, it also included exclusive titles like “Forza Motorsport 5” and “Dead Rising 3.”

The Xbox One brought several new features to the Xbox ecosystem, including an upgraded Kinect sensor, voice controls, and an emphasis on being an all-in-one entertainment system for the living room.

While the initial reception was mixed due to some controversial policies (which Microsoft later reversed), the Xbox One went on to be a successful platform for Microsoft, competing with the PlayStation 4 throughout the generation.

Looking back, it’s interesting to see how the rumours and speculation compared to the reality of the Xbox One’s release. What are your thoughts on how the console has performed since its launch? Do you think it lived up to the pre-release hype? Let us know in the comments below.
