An employee of Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm Studios has revealed a previously unknown trick for players to gain extra health in the gory fighting game. The feature could significantly impact character selections for both the main roster and the Kameo fighters.

Announced suddenly as a reboot in May, Mortal Kombat 1 entered early access this week for those who pre-ordered premium editions. The full launch arrives on September 19th. As the latest entry in the famously brutal franchise, gameplay is faster-paced than ever in this latest entry, so players will surely welcome any edge they can get.

The health boost tip comes courtesy of lead QA tester Stephanie Brownback. Responding to speculation about varied health values online, she tweeted that both your main kombatant and Kameo fighter contribute to overall vitality. Pairing “big meaty” picks like Shao Kahn or Jax can majorly inflate your health bar. However, raw size doesn’t always equal more health, as Brownback confirmed in response to a fan.

Whilst now available in early access, MK1 is missing one key feature at launch – crossplay. The official Mortal Kombat account stated online multiplayer is currently limited to matching platforms, although crossplay should arrive soon after release. On the plus side, NetherRealm previously confirmed rollback netcode for solid connections.

Fatality System More Brutal Than Ever

The exact health calculations remain a bit unclear. But some fans seem more concerned with rumours of a secret 24th fighter. The character select screen still contains a mysterious blacked-out silhouette with a plus sign, sparking theories of a hidden unlockable kombatant. Others believe it simply represents the forthcoming Kombat Pack 1, containing violent superheroes Peacemaker, Homelander and Omni-Man alongside returnees Quan Chi, Ermac and Takeda.

Either way, early-access players have plenty to sink their teeth into whilst unravelling MK1‘s secrets. The overhauled fatality system now lets you dismember foes layer-by-layer, and stage-specific finishers include tossing opponents into spinning helicopter blades or an active volcano. Recently the final launch trailer was revealed to pump up the fans even more before it finally arrives.

For brutal beat-em-up fans, this fresh and bloody reboot looks set to push boundaries and break bones in delightfully gruesome new ways.
