Exciting news for fans of Ubisoft’s popular action role-playing game franchise Tom Clancy’s The Division – the publisher has quietly announced that a third installment is officially in the works.

The stealthy confirmation came as Ubisoft announced that Julian Gerighty will be taking over as executive producer of the entire Division brand. In the statement, Ubisoft casually dropped that Gerighty will be focusing on The Division 3 as well as other projects in the Division universe.

This low-key announcement of the next mainline sequel was quickly picked up by fans, and The Division 3 immediately began trending on social media platforms like Twitter. Supporters of the franchise have been hoping for a new game for years now, ever since the launch of the well-received The Division 2 a couple of years back in 2019.

The online-only action role-playing games take place in a dystopian near-future United States that has been ravaged by a devastating viral pandemic known as the Dollar Flu. Originating as a mutated form of smallpox, the virus first brings New York City to its knees before eventually spreading to Washington DC.

Players take on the role of elite Division agents tasked with restoring order amidst the chaos. The franchise has earned praise for its polished third-person shooting gameplay and RPG mechanics, both in single player campaigns and multiplayer modes. The immersive open worlds depicting post-outbreak Manhattan and DC are also fan favourites.

Earlier leaks this year suggested a third installment was not on Ubisoft’s radar, so this surprise confirmation of The Division 3 comes as welcome news to supporters. Apart from the brief mention in the Gerighty announcement, no further information about the sequel is available yet.

Other Upcoming Projects in the Franchise

Ubisoft’s statement also referenced additional upcoming projects in The Division universe beyond just the core series. These include the free-to-play title The Division Heartland and a mobile title called The Division Resurgence.

Resurgence in particular has already undergone closed beta testing and first impressions seem positive so far. As with the original Division game, Resurgence will be set in a virus-ravaged New York City as players join the vanguard of Division agents at the start of the outbreak. Familiar features like the Dark Zone PvP area will return along with cameos from known characters.

The tactical shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege has been a huge hit for Ubisoft Montreal as well, so the French publishers have two Clancy franchises under their belt.

While these new ventures have their merits, many franchise devotees have made it clear that The Division 3 is the true sequel they have long been waiting for. Hopefully Ubisoft will share more details about the next main chapter sooner rather than later.

For now, fans will have to remain patient and scour every bit of news from Ubisoft for clues. But the confirmation that the action RPG is in active development is still an exciting milestone for this beloved franchise.
