Bandai Namco has released a new Tekken 8 Kuma gameplay trailer, showcasing the returning bear’s updated fighting style, Heihachi-inspired techniques and unusual salmon attacks. Published on 27 December 2023, the footage also revisits Kuma’s long-running affection for Panda ahead of the game’s January launch.
Kuma, nicknamed the Master of Salmon, has been part of the Tekken series since the original game, although the current bear succeeded his predecessor in Tekken 3. His latest appearance features a red headband and a rugged martial arts outfit inspired by his master, Heihachi Mishima.
The trailer demonstrates Kuma’s official fighting style, Heihachi-Style Advanced Kuma Shin Ken, combining heavy paw strikes, powerful throws and techniques associated with Heihachi. Among the standout attacks is an electric uppercut resembling Heihachi’s signature Electric Wind God Fist.
Kuma also puts his favourite food to good use in combat. His enormous salmon becomes a weapon for striking opponents, while one particularly elaborate sequence sees him launch the fish like a missile after knocking his opponent into the air.
I particularly like how Bandai Namco has incorporated Heihachi’s techniques into Kuma’s moveset. It makes his updated fighting style feel connected to his master rather than simply relying on the character’s familiar comedy.
That relationship also plays an important role in Kuma’s story. According to Bandai Namco’s official character biography, Kuma serves in the Mishima Zaibatsu’s Tekken Force and regularly helps with disaster relief efforts across Southeast Asia.
However, after Heihachi departed to confront Kazuya Mishima and failed to return, Kuma continued waiting for his master. With G Corporation gaining the upper hand against the Mishima Zaibatsu, the bear faces an uncertain future without the person who trained him.
The new trailer also features Kuma’s longstanding affection for Panda, Ling Xiaoyu’s companion and bodyguard. During their encounter, Kuma attempts to propose by presenting her with a salmon, only for Panda to reject the gesture and knock the fish away.
Their familiar rivalry provides a humorous contrast to the more aggressive fighting techniques on display. It also reinforces how Kuma’s personality extends beyond his role as an unusual playable fighter.
With Kuma’s dedicated gameplay trailer now released, Bandai Namco continues showcasing the individual fighting styles of its confirmed 32-character launch roster. The bear’s new techniques demonstrate how returning characters are being adapted for Tekken 8 while retaining their established identities.
