Key Highlights:

  • It brings 200 quests and a huge map to a post-nuclear London setting.
  • In interviews, the modders referenced hopes to form a new studio after launch.
  • They want to emulate The Forgotten City’s developer Modern Storyteller.
  • That game began life as a Skyrim mod before becoming a commercial release.
  • The team believes their work shows promise for bigger things.

Ambitious Modding Project Nears Launch

After 5 years of development, the Fallout London mod for Fallout 4 is set to launch on April 23rd, 2024. This fan-made total conversion brings the post-nuclear RPG to a painstakingly recreated atompunk London.

The volunteer modders created a sprawling map containing 15 boroughs and over 190 quests. Real-world landmarks like Big Ben, the London Eye, Tower Bridge and more are blended with fictionalised locations in the Fallout universe’s divergent 1950s-inspired stylings.

Early development challenges led to a full project reset one year in, but grew smoother with more structured organisation. Consistent progress culminated in a firm release date for one of the most expansive Fallout mods ever attempted.

In an exclusive recent interview with DualShockers, Project Lead Dean Carter spoke to ambitions beyond Fallout: London. He referenced The Forgotten City, another mod that became a successful standalone game, as their inspiration.

The Forgotten City began life as a quest mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim back in 2015. Leveraging their work, creator Nick Pearce later established Modern Storyteller as an independent studio. After securing funding, they released The Forgotten City as a commercial episodic adventure in 2021 to critical acclaim.

Carter said the team believes their work shows promise worthy of a similar transition. They don’t plan to expand the mod itself, but may look to develop a new original game as a studio. The years of close collaboration give them confidence in their capabilities.

Proving Themselves First

Some observers have noted the team should remain focused on first releasing Fallout London as planned before contemplating any major next steps. Past mod projects have often crumbled after overpromising.

However, The Forgotten City and games like Roblox prove mods can serve as successful prototypes for commercial products. If this entry meets its ambitions, spinning up a studio immediately after makes sense to capitalise on momentum.

Of course, funding realities may force Team FOLON to scale back expectations of fast-tracking development. But advanced planning is prudent if the mod fulfils its promise. At minimum, Fallout: London will make an impressive calling card to kickstart their careers.

For now, the team is driving toward finally bringing their dark vision of post-apocalyptic London to eager fans worldwide. But the skills and passion that fuelled this massive mod could quickly power original game ideas. The team simply needs to prove themselves by first stick the landing on this vaulted launch.
