In the ever-evolving world of gaming, even older titles can be given a fresh coat of paint, as one industrious individual has proven by showcasing Fallout 4 in Unreal Engine 5 – a transformation that’s undeniably breathtaking. Despite being an eight-year-old gem from the post-apocalyptic RPG series, Fallout 4, with its intricately designed world, continues to be a testament to the prowess of game development.

Fallout 4 may not top the list of all-time favourite Fallout games, yet its attributes are myriad. An expansive universe to traverse, an array of content providing countless hours of gameplay, and a robust modding community blend together, ensuring its prominent place in the beloved franchise. Nevertheless, the game’s original construction in Bethesda’s in-house Creation Engine, the same engine responsible for the creation of Skyrim, was beginning to exhibit its limitations even in 2015.

An Imaginative Venture: Fallout 4 Rendered in Unreal Engine 5

This may well be the inspiration behind Ghost Design, a YouTuber and artist, venturing to reimagine Fallout 4 using the Unreal Engine 5. Ghost Design’s latest video presents a slideshow of this legendary open-world title, freshly rejuvenated with numerous visual upgrades. The application of photoscanned assets from sources such as Megascans affords the game a contemporary revamp, presenting textures with details on par with modern releases. Regrettably, Ghost Design has had to opt for a slideshow over a full video, citing a failure of the renderer in Unreal which is a shame.

Unreal Engine has cemented its status as one of the globally acclaimed game engines, underpinning a multitude of AAA and indie games alike. The advent of its fifth version brings with it enhanced capabilities and tools that can enable video games to mirror reality in an uncanny fashion. Its potency is acknowledged even outside developer circles, particularly when contrasted against the 11-year-old Creation Engine.

With the confirmation of Fallout 5’s development, fans are brimming with anticipation for this fresh addition to the long-standing series, a sentiment heightened by the initial disappointment surrounding Fallout 76. The release timeline for this new instalment remains a mystery, though it’s presumed to come after Elder Scrolls 6, the arrival date of which also remains a puzzle.

Fallout 4 continues to be available on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, with versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S anticipated in 2023.
