Key Highlights:

  • Original Resident Evil 2 (1998) re-releasing on GOG.
  • Launch date set for 27th of August 2024.
  • Improved compatibility with modern PCs and controllers.

GOG has announced that the original 1998 version of Capcom’s classic Resident Evil 2 will be available on their platform from August 27th 2024.

This isn’t the 2019 remake that had gamers cowering behind their sofas – we’re talking about the PlayStation-era gem that defined a generation of horror gaming.

While Resident Evil 2 is often remembered as a PlayStation classic, it did see a PC release back in the day.

However, as many gamers know, running these older titles on modern systems can be a bit of a nightmare.

That’s where GOG comes in, offering more than just a simple re-release of the original Windows version.

Enhanced Compatibility and Gameplay Features

GOG is going the extra mile to ensure this classic runs smoothly on our modern machines. The improvements range from the essential to the amusing.

“Issue-less game exit” and “Improved game registry settings” might not sound exciting, but they’re crucial for a smooth gaming experience.

Audio fixes and improved subtitles are also on the cards, enhancing the atmospheric tension that made the original so memorable.

But it’s not all about fixing old problems. GOG is throwing in some bonuses too. The 4th Survivor and The Tofu Survivor modes, usually unlockable extras, will be available from the start.

It’s a nice touch for those who want to dive straight into these challenging game modes.

This re-release is part of a larger initiative by GOG to bring the original Resident Evil trilogy to modern PCs.

The first game in the series appeared on the platform in June, with Resident Evil 3 still waiting in the wings.

For those eager to secure the full nostalgic experience, GOG is offering the option to purchase all three games as a bundle.

While the exact details of the improvements aren’t fully known, we can make some educated guesses based on GOG’s treatment of the first Resident Evil.

Expect bug fixes, improved texture display, and support for modern controllers including DualSense, Switch, and Xbox controllers.

It’s important to note that this isn’t a HD remaster or a remake – it’s the original game, lovingly adapted for modern systems.

As with all GOG releases, Resident Evil 2 will be DRM-free and won’t require a constant internet connection.

This commitment to player-friendly practices is part of what makes these re-releases so appealing to longtime fans and newcomers alike.

One of the Greatest Games of All-Time

RE2 will always have a special place in my heart

For many, Resident Evil 2 represents the peak of the series. The claustrophobic corridors of the Raccoon City Police Department created a uniquely tense atmosphere that many argue has never been surpassed.

While the 2019 remake was widely praised, there’s something special about the original’s tank controls and fixed camera angles that modern games struggle to replicate.

This re-release offers a perfect opportunity for new players to experience a pivotal moment in gaming history, and for veterans to revisit a beloved classic without the technical headaches often associated with older PC games.

I personally rank this as the greatest video game of all-time! That is however just my personal opinion and a lot of that has to do with nostalgia for sure.
