Key Highlights:

  • Alan Wake 2 receives its first major PC update for 2025.
  • New features include DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation and RTX Mega Geometry.
  • Update optimised for the new RTX 50 Series graphics cards, enhancing performance and visuals.

Critically acclaimed for its immersive atmosphere and photorealistic presentation, Alan Wake 2 now benefits from a substantial PC update released on 30th January 2025.

Developed by Remedy Entertainment in close collaboration with Nvidia, the update introduces a suite of improvements designed to harness the power of the newly launched RTX 50 Series graphics cards while also enhancing performance for users with previous Nvidia RTX cards.

The latest patch, which is officially called Update 1.2.8 is a notable milestone for a game that has already set a high benchmark since its October 2023 release.

The enhancements include the integration of DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation, which allows gamers to maximise graphics and ray tracing settings, reaching frame rates of over 230fps at 4K resolution on the new RTX 50 Series cards.

Even those with older Nvidia RTX hardware will enjoy significant benefits from upgraded DLSS features such as improved DLSS Super ResolutionDLSS Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA technology.

Additionally, Alan Wake 2 is the first game to feature Nvidia’s RTX Mega Geometry technology across all RTX GPUs.

This new technology accelerates the building of bounding volume hierarchies, accommodating up to 100 times more ray-traced triangles.

The result is a smoother performance in scenes that rely heavily on ray tracing, reducing issues like shadow draw-in and lowering VRAM usage.

Remedy has also introduced an Ultra quality ray tracing preset, which brings fully ray-traced reflections, transparent reflections, and higher-quality indirect lighting into play.

These enhancements ensure that elements such as glass and water now display more accurate refractions and pixel-perfect reflections, adding another layer of realism to the game.

For those eager to experience these improvements, the update is available for download via the Epic Games Store.

It is important to note that, at present, Alan Wake 2 remains an Epic Games Store exclusive for PC, meaning Steam users will have to wait for further announcements.

    • Adds DLSS Multi Frame Generation. This is available on RTX 5000 series GPUs.
  • Added options for DLSS Frame Generation
    • 2X available on GeForce RTX 4000 and RTX 5000 series GPUs
    • Multi Frame Generation (3X and 4X) available on RTX 5000 series GPUs
  • Improved Ray Tracing CPU and GPU load, VRAM usage and image quality thanks to RTX Mega Geometry. This is supported and automatically enabled on all RTXs GPUs when using the latest drivers.
  • Added the new Ray Tracing quality level setting, Ultra, which is available in the Options.
    • Adds fully ray traced refractions and transparent reflections.
    • Improves the quality of fully ray traced indirect lighting.
    • Supported on all RTX GPUs while DLSS Ray Reconstruction is enabled.
      • Note: Ultra ray tracing currently critically relies on DLSS Ray Reconstruction for denoising, so Ultra ray tracing setting is not available when DLSS Ray Reconstruction is not supported or is disabled.
  • Added V-sync option for full and half-refresh rate.

The patch notes were originally shared on the official website for the game and that page will be updated as more patches follow throughout the years.

Mika Vehkala, Chief Technology Officer at Remedy Entertainment, stated:

This update not only raises the bar for visual fidelity in Alan Wake 2 but also reinforces Remedy Entertainment’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge performance improvements to its players. Even after its October release, the devs quickly rolled out a patch in the same month to cure critical issues.

Overall, this new PC update marks another significant step in the evolution of the survival horror title.

By embracing advanced technologies and optimising both graphics and performance, Remedy Entertainment is ensuring that the game remains at the forefront of technical achievement and continues to offer an outstanding experience for its fans.
