Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is finally closing in on release, but the full experience won’t be available day one. The single-player campaign, an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2004 classic, lands on August 28th, while its new online multiplayer mode, Fox Hunt, will arrive later in the fall.
Fox Hunt isn’t Metal Gear Online reborn. As someone who played MGO extensively back in the PS3 era, I can tell you that this is something very different. Director Yu Sahara has made it clear the goal here isn’t just to recreate the past but to rethink how Metal Gear’s core mechanics – stealth, camouflage, and survival – can work in a modern multiplayer environment.
It’s designed to be more like an elaborate, high-stakes hide-and-seek rather than a pure gunfight. That’s a bold approach given today’s multiplayer market, where speed and spectacle often overshadow slower, more methodical gameplay.
Pushing Fox Hunt beyond launch might frustrate those eager to test their skills against other players right away, but there’s some wisdom in holding it back. We’ve seen far too many games trip over themselves by shipping an unfinished multiplayer component alongside a massive single-player release.
Giving the team breathing room to refine netcode, balance, and map design could make the difference between a throwaway mode and one that earns a dedicated player base.
The single-player side of MGS Delta Snake Eater meanwhile, promises a complete technical rebuild, new motion capture, upgraded animations, modernised controls, all wrapped around one of the most tightly constructed stealth narratives ever made. It’ll be heading to PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
If the multiplayer can land with the same level of polish, Fox Hunt might just carve out its own niche in the competitive stealth space. For now, August 28 belongs to Snake, and the hunt will have to wait.
