We reported earlier this year that Lionsgate were planning a John Wick AAA game and it has finally come to fruition.

Revealed during Sony’s State of Play showcase, the currently untitled game is a mature, single-player third-person action experience designed to translate the franchise’s stylised combat into an interactive format. Development is being handled in close partnership with franchise director Chad Stahelski, signalling that this is intended as a canonical extension of the series rather than a loose adaptation.

Keanu Reeves Returns as the Baba Yaga

Fans will be stepping into familiar shoes, as Keanu Reeves is confirmed to reprise his role. He will contribute his likeness and voice, reinforcing the game’s connection to the films’ timeline and tone.

That level of involvement suggests a story-driven production with the same attention to choreography and character that defines the movies.

An Original Story Set Before the Films

Rather than retelling existing events, the game explores an earlier chapter of John Wick’s life, set before the infamous “Impossible Task.” The narrative is being written collaboratively between Saber, Stahelski and Lionsgate, and will feature a mix of familiar faces and new characters created specifically for the game.

This approach gives the developers room to expand the lore without conflicting with established canon, particularly around the High Table and the assassin underworld.

Built Around Signature Gun-Fu Combat

Combat is being designed from the ground up to mirror the rhythm and physicality of the films. Developers have highlighted:

  • Close-quarters gun-fu mechanics inspired by the choreography
  • Cinematic camerawork and presentation to emulate the movies
  • Neo-noir environments and driving sequences woven into missions

The stated goal is to blur the line between cinema and gameplay, making players feel like they are actively performing the action rather than watching it unfold.

From my perspective, translating John Wick’s tightly choreographed action into gameplay is a serious design challenge, so building a bespoke combat system instead of retrofitting an existing one is the right call if authenticity is the aim.

The franchise has already moved beyond film into television with The Continental, and it continues to branch out with spin-offs such as Ballerina. A big-budget game is a natural next step for a series built on world-building and stylised action.

No Release Date Yet

The project does not yet have an official title or launch window, though it is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. More details, including gameplay footage and the final name, are expected in a future reveal.

For now, the announcement confirms that John Wick is finally getting the full AAA treatment many fans have been waiting for.
