Key Highlights:
- Star Trek: Legends will disappear from digital storefronts on August 20, 2026.
- Previously downloaded copies will remain playable until the game permanently closes on September 3.
- The shutdown will make the entire game unavailable, despite its single-player campaign and Survival mode.
Star Trek: Legends will be removed from digital storefronts on August 20, 2026, before permanently becoming unplayable two weeks later.
Publisher Tilting Point announced that players who download the team-based RPG before August 20 can continue playing until September 3. Star Trek: Legends will then be taken offline across its supported platforms.
“Every mission must eventually reach its final frontier,” Tilting Point said in the official sunset announcement. The company thanked players for assembling teams, recruiting characters and exploring the Nexus since the game’s original launch.
The wording confirms that September 3 is the permanent shutdown date rather than August 20. The earlier deadline concerns the game’s availability for download through digital storefronts.
Star Trek: Legends began as an Apple Arcade release in 2021. Emerald City Games later adapted the RPG for PC and consoles, with the Steam version entering Early Access in February 2024 before its full release on September 2, 2024.
The expanded edition featured more than 90 playable heroes and villains drawn from Star Trek: The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery and Picard. Players controlled teams of four characters through turn-based battles aboard the U.S.S. Artemis.
The game also included eight campaign episodes, Survival mode, Shuttlecraft assignments, daily Operations and competitive PvP battles. Steam continues to identify Star Trek: Legends as both a single-player and online PvP game, but its system requirements list a broadband internet connection.
Several console editions had already disappeared before the wider announcement. The Nintendo Switch version was unavailable from the eShop by August 3, although previous owners could reportedly still redownload it at that point.
Tilting Point has not publicly explained why Star Trek: Legends is closing. Licensing problems are therefore possible, but they remain unconfirmed.
Star Trek: Resurgence provides relevant context because its publisher explicitly said that its distribution licence had ended when announcing that game’s delisting in April 2026. However, no equivalent licensing statement has been issued for Star Trek: Legends.
Star Trek games have faced similar licensing losses before. Digital Extremes’ 2013 co-op shooter, covered in our Star Trek: The Video Game PC review, was removed from Steam in April 2016 after its Paramount Pictures licence expired. That earlier delisting did not make existing copies unplayable, which makes the complete shutdown of Star Trek: Legends a more serious preservation issue.
That distinction matters. Star Trek: Resurgence remained accessible to existing Steam owners following its delisting, whereas the Star Trek: Legends announcement says the RPG will no longer be playable after September 3.
Recent Steam reviews have fallen to a Very Negative rating, with only 18% of 16 reviews submitted during the previous 30 days marked as positive at the time of writing. Its lifetime rating remains Mixed, based on 247 Steam purchases.
Some players have criticised the lack of a permanent single-player option. Community reports suggest that console copies can currently operate offline under certain conditions, but this behaviour has not been guaranteed by Tilting Point and could change before the final closure.
In my view, the most important part of this announcement is not the delisting itself. It is the decision to make a paid game with substantial single-player content completely inaccessible to existing owners.
The official announcement refers broadly to removal from “digital storefronts” and says the game will no longer be playable after September 3. It does not separately explain what will happen to the original Apple Arcade edition, so its precise removal process remains unclear.
Players who want any final time with Star Trek: Legends should ensure that the game is downloaded before August 20. Its servers are scheduled to close permanently on September 3, 2026.
