A new Mafia: Definitive Edition ESRB rating has appeared for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, providing strong evidence that 2K is preparing current-generation versions of Hangar 13’s 2020 remake.
The new classification is ESRB rating 41423. It lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series under supported platforms. The game retains its Mature 17+ rating for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes and Strong Language. It also carries an In-Game Purchases notice.
This is separate from Mafia: Definitive Edition’s original ESRB entry.

The older classification remains live and lists Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia and Xbox One. Its content descriptors and rating summary are effectively the same as the new filing.
That makes the platform change the important new attribute.
2K has not announced PS5 or Xbox Series editions of Mafia: Definitive Edition at the time of writing. The publisher’s official Mafia website still describes the game as available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
The same distinction appeared in 2K’s franchise promotion on June 5, 2026. Mafia: The Old Country was listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while Mafia: Definitive Edition was separately advertised for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
I think that makes this considerably stronger than a routine re-rating. The ESRB has not simply added modern consoles to the old record. It has created a separate classification whose defining difference is PS5 and Xbox Series support.
The filing does not reveal what technical improvements those versions could receive.
There is currently no official confirmation of higher frame rates, upgraded resolutions, DualSense support, new graphical modes or additional content. A release date and upgrade path are also unknown.
Xbox creates one wrinkle in the evidence.
The existing Xbox One version is already playable on Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility. Microsoft’s current store lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S under playable devices. It also retains the original September 2020 release date and identifies features such as Xbox One X Enhanced, 4K Ultra HD and HDR10.
That existing compatibility does not explain the new ESRB filing by itself. The original rating already covered the Xbox One release, whereas rating 41423 specifically identifies Xbox Series as a platform.
Mafia: Definitive Edition also joined Xbox Game Pass in August 2024, giving Xbox players another route into Tommy Angelo’s story before any dedicated current-gen edition had surfaced. The version added at the time was the existing console release rather than a newly announced Xbox Series edition.
PlayStation provides an even clearer distinction because 2K continues to market Mafia: Definitive Edition specifically as a PlayStation 4 game. The new ESRB classification is the first primary-source evidence uncovered here that explicitly assigns the remake to PlayStation 5.
The timing is also notable.
Mafia: The Old Country’s Man of Honor expansion launches on August 14, one day after this ESRB discovery. The expansion follows Enzo Favara during his early service to the Torrisi family and gives a younger Ennio Salieri a major role.
Salieri later emigrates to America and becomes the Don who employs Tommy Angelo in Mafia: Definitive Edition. Man of Honor therefore creates a direct narrative bridge between 1905 Sicily and the remake’s Lost Heaven storyline.
That connection does not prove that 2K plans to announce the new versions alongside Man of Honor. No such announcement has been made.
It does, however, mean Mafia: Definitive Edition is becoming especially relevant again just as 2K prepares to expand Salieri’s history in The Old Country.
The new ESRB summary does not point towards substantial new story content. It describes the same core game, including Tommy Angelo’s rise through the Salieri crime family, gun battles, melee combat and the existing brothel sequence.
That suggests the new classification concerns platform availability rather than a materially different version of the campaign.
Mafia: Definitive Edition originally launched on September 25, 2020. Hangar 13 rebuilt the 2002 Mafia from the ground up with an expanded script, additional cutscenes, new gameplay sequences and a redesigned version of Lost Heaven.
At the time of writing, 2K and Hangar 13 have not announced PS5 or Xbox Series editions.
The ESRB filing therefore changes the game’s current state from no announced native current-gen version to official regulatory evidence for PS5 and Xbox Series versions.
The remaining questions are when 2K plans to reveal them, what enhancements they include, and whether existing owners will receive an upgrade.
