More than 12 years after launch, PlayStation 4 has received another system software update, taking Sony’s last-generation console to version 14.00.
Released on September 16, Sony’s entire public changelog consists of one familiar line: “We’ve improved system software performance and stability.” No new interface features, applications or other player-facing additions have been announced for PS4 alongside the update.
The 14.00 number makes the update look more substantial than it really is.
Sony has settled into a remarkably consistent firmware pattern with PS4. Version 10.00 arrived in September 2022, followed by 11.00 in September 2023, 12.00 in September 2024 and 13.00 in September 2025. Version 14.00 continuing that sequence in September 2026 therefore represents the console’s annual whole-number revision rather than evidence of a major feature update.
I think that context matters because seeing 14.00 would normally suggest something larger than another stability patch. On PS4, however, the version number has become a fairly predictable part of Sony’s yearly firmware cycle.
This is already the fourth PS4 update released during 2026. Version 13.04 arrived on January 28 with security fixes, while 13.50 followed in March with improvements to messages and usability on certain screens. Sony then released 13.52 on June 16, returning to security fixes before this week’s stability-focused release.
GLN previously covered PS4 update 12.52 and its security fixes, part of an increasingly familiar pattern where Sony continues maintaining the console without adding substantial new functionality.
The timing is particularly noticeable because PS5 received a much larger update on the same day. System software 26.06-14.00.00 added the Community Activity widget to the Welcome Hub, an optional indicator showing who is speaking during voice chat and, on PS5 Pro, enabled enhanced PSSR image quality by default.
That contrast reflects where PlayStation development is now focused. Sony has already begun reducing parts of its legacy PS4 ecosystem, with the wider PS4 support wind-down beginning in 2026 as newer system features and services increasingly centre on PS5.
PS4 owners do not necessarily need version 14.00 simply to launch an existing offline game. However, Sony states that updated system software can be required for some applications and content, while network features require the current PS4 system software.
Anyone who has not received the update automatically can check manually through Settings > System Software Update. Sony also provides USB and Safe Mode installation methods through its official PS4 system software page.
For now, 14.00 appears to be exactly what Sony says it is: another maintenance update keeping the PS4 running, rather than a late surprise feature drop for the 2013 console.
