Key Highlights:
- PS4 firmware update 12.52 now available globally.
- Patch delivers security fixes only, with no added features.
- Jailbreaking community impacted as Sony plugs known exploits.
Sony has released a new system software update for the PlayStation 4, bringing its firmware up to version 12.52.
Available worldwide now, this update focuses solely on backend security, with no new features or visual enhancements included.
The patch arrives just four months after the previous PS4 update in March, which offered minor UI tweaks.
This time, however, Sony’s notes are minimal: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.” That’s the full extent of what’s officially shared, suggesting that the real target may be recent exploits uncovered by the modding community. While PlayStation 4 updates are becoming less frequent as attention shifts totally to the PS5, the console still boasts an active player base. For users still gaming on PS4, it’s recommended to download the update to maintain security and system stability.
Notably, the modding scene may see setbacks as this patch likely closes loopholes that enabled homebrew activity and game preservation mods, such as the recent revival of DriveClub at 60 FPS.
Sony continues to reinforce its stance on platform security across all generations – even issuing a similar PS3 update earlier this year.
As for PS5, users are also in a bit of a dry spell. Aside from April’s reintroduction of classic themes to celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, there’s been little movement on the feature front.
