Key Highlights:

  • PS Plus will shift focus to PS5 titles from January 2026.
  • PS4 games will be offered only occasionally as a bonus feature.
  • Loyal PlayStation users are encouraged to consider an upgrade.

Sony has confirmed that major changes are coming to its PS Plus service. From January 2026, PS4 games will no longer be a primary benefit.

Instead, the service will focus on providing PS5 titles as part of its monthly offerings and game catalogue.

This marks another significant evolution in a service that has grown considerably since its early days during the PS3 era. In its early years, PS Plus offered subscribers free monthly games, exclusive discounts, and online multiplayer. With the launch of the PlayStation 4, the service expanded, and later with the PS5, it was restructured into tiers. Now, as the focus shifts toward next-generation gaming, PS4 content will become an occasional bonus rather than a main feature.

The iconic console made its debut almost 12 years ago in November 2013 and is still going strong today!

This extremely important announcement was made very casually on the PlayStation official website via the latest blog post. The key information on the changes was at the very bottom/end of the blog entry, which comes across as a bit bizarre.

For such an momentous notice, you’d think that the Japanese gaming giants would be posting it all over their socials. Millions of gamers still use last-gen consoles and may feel disappointed by this change.

However, Sony has assured subscribers that the PS4 titles already downloaded will remain accessible for the duration of their membership. This means that while new free titles will favour PlayStation 5, existing libraries on the PS4 will not disappear overnight.

Members have got until February 3rd (tomorrow as of this writing) to add Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered to their libraries.

Alongside this update, Sony announced the free games for February 2025, including titles like Payday 3High on Life, and Pac-Man World: Re-Pac.

This move continues to deliver value to subscribers while signalling a shift towards newer technology.

This strategic update is part of a broader plan to focus on the most compelling and relevant gaming experiences. I can only see Sony concentrating more and more on the PlayStation 5 as they look set to shift existing PlayStation 4 players to the newer console.

By highlighting the unique benefits of PS5 and ensuring continued support for those who still enjoy PS4, Sony is striking a balance between progress and loyalty to its long-time fans. As the industry moves forward, gamers have nearly a full year to plan their next steps before these changes take effect.
