PlayStation 4 Services Begin Shutting Down in Spring 2026

Stylised PlayStation 4 logo partially submerged in ice, with a playful emoji featuring a dizzy face and crossed eyes.

Key Highlights:

  • PS4 services begin winding down in spring 2026, marking the first major step toward full retirement.
  • New PS4 games will lose access to six key PSN features, with PS Plus support also scaling back.
  • Existing titles retain integrations, but future releases are expected to shift fully to PS5.

Sony is preparing to wind down parts of PlayStation 4 support in 2026, and the first concrete step is feature deprecation for new submissions.

Documentation shared with developers points to six PSN services that will no longer be available to games submitted after spring 2026, while shipped titles keep what they already use. In practical terms, that discourages new AAA and live service launches on PS4 and nudges the remaining cross-gen pipeline toward PS5 only.

As reported by InsiderGaming, the following services will be unavailable to new PS4 submissions: Activity Feed Web APIShared Media Web APITitle Small Storage (TSS)Title User Storage (TUS)Users and Profiles, and Word Filters.

Existing PS4 games can continue using these integrations, but the upcoming removal affects some of the system’s most essential APIs. It also aligns with the next phase of PlayStation Plus, which begins phasing out PS4 titles in January 2026, gradually replacing its legacy library with newer platform content.

From a technical and community standpoint, these changes are significant.

The Activity Feed and Shared Media functions drive much of the console’s social interactivity, letting players see friends’ achievements, screenshots, and clips. Without them, any new release would feel isolated from the broader PlayStation ecosystem.

Meanwhile, TSS and TUS handle lightweight user data such as save preferences and session states.

Losing access to these would force developers to build bespoke systems, adding development time and cost for an aging platform. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Sony is ready to push players and studios alike toward PS5 as the standard. For players, this means 2026 will likely be the last year that sees regular cross-gen releases. Popular online titles will continue receiving updates, but new releases will become rarer.

Players still on PS4 should look at migrating their libraries to PS5-compatible versions where possible to future-proof their purchases.

For developers, this is a practical warning. If a studio is still planning a PS4 version of a game due after spring 2026, it’s time to re-evaluate. Any reliance on those deprecated services will require a redesign or the removal of features altogether.

Maintaining parity across generations is no longer cost-effective, and Sony’s infrastructure shift all but confirms that support for PS4 is now in its twilight phase. If reports prove accurate, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 may stand as the final major blockbuster to ship on the console.

Beyond that, Sony is expected to maintain minimal firmware and security updates while phasing out most platform-level integrations. As development focus tightens around PS5 and eventually PS6, the PS4’s twelve-year run looks set to end in much the same way as the PS3 before it.
