Key Highlights:
- Season of Scares begins a six-week Oogie Boogie questline, with a new challenge unlocking every Wednesday.
- Players who start the first quest before 4 November can finish the entire storyline later and permanently unlock Oogie Boogie and Zero.
- The free update also adds Decoration Preset sharing, Clear Biome, more useful Floating Islands and major Photo Mode improvements.
Available now, Disney Dreamlight Valley Season of Scares has brought Oogie Boogie into the Valley, but permanently unlocking The Nightmare Before Christmas villain requires players to work through six weekly Halloween challenges first.
Rather than welcoming Oogie Boogie and then beginning his Friendship Quests, Gameloft has reversed the usual structure. Players investigate a mysterious mirror inside Scrooge McDuck’s Store, enter Oogie Boogie’s twisted version of the shop and complete his games before he becomes a permanent Villager.
To begin, players need to have unlocked the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store and Chez Remy. Once those requirements are met, an in-game message directs them back to Scrooge’s shop to start the first quest.
The complete six-week schedule is:
| Date | Oogie Boogie quest |
|---|---|
| 23 September | A Halloween Invasion |
| 30 September | The Oogie Boogie Contract |
| 7 October | The Ghost in the Portrait |
| 14 October | Rescue Mission |
| 21 October | Let the Games Begin |
| 28 October | Oogie Boogie’s Big Game |
That makes 28 October the earliest point at which all six weekly challenges will have become available. Zero, Jack Skellington’s ghost dog, is unlocked somewhere along the journey before completing the full event eventually makes Oogie Boogie a permanent Valley resident.
There is an important bit of flexibility for anyone who cannot log in every week. Players only need to begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before 4 November. Once that has happened, Gameloft says the remaining quests can be completed at their own pace even after the Halloween event has ended.
Anyone who misses that entry deadline will have to wait. Oogie Boogie leaves after 4 November for players who never started the storyline, with Gameloft confirming that another opportunity to unlock him will arrive around Halloween next year.
The late-2026 Disney Dreamlight Valley roadmap had already revealed that Oogie Boogie would arrive through a six-week Halloween event. What it did not explain was that his permanent Villager unlock would effectively become the reward for completing that event rather than something available immediately.
I think that structure makes Oogie Boogie more interesting than another update-day character drop. It gives the Halloween period an actual progression thread, although anyone hoping to move him next door to Jack Skellington immediately is going to have to wait.
Season of Scares also introduces the Haunting Elegance Star Path with Halloween furniture, outfits, the Tricks and Treats House and a Skeleton Scrooge Dream Style. Two further seasonal events follow in October: Haunted Floating Festival runs from 7 to 31 October, while Trick or Treat takes place from 14 to 31 October with new Halloween Town exterior decorations among its rewards.
Away from Oogie Boogie, some of the most useful changes are aimed at players who spend hours decorating their Valley.
Decoration Presets can now be shared through generated codes that remain valid for 14 days, even if the original creator subsequently changes or deletes the design. Once another player adds the Preset to their collection, they can continue using it after the sharing code expires.
Floating Islands have become considerably more practical as well. Tiana’s Palace, Daisy’s Boutique, Olaf’s Grand Exhibition, Stables, WALL-E’s Garden, Moana’s Boat, Beast’s Greenhouse and several character stalls can now be relocated onto them. Even the Valley Visit Station can be moved, although its multiplayer functionality cannot be used while it is sitting on a Floating Island.
Clear Biome has finally made its proper return, allowing Furniture, Landscaping, Fences and Paths to be removed by category from an entire Biome or expansion Sub-Biome rather than deleting everything individually.
The word finally is justified here. Clear Biome was originally intended for July’s Pixel Perfect update, but Gameloft discovered a critical bug shortly before launch and removed the feature from affected versions while warning Nintendo and Apple players not to use it where it remained accessible. Season of Scares is therefore the feature’s full return rather than its original debut.
Newer players also receive a permanent Astronomer’s Journey Star Path after unlocking their first Realm and speaking with Merlin. It introduces the Event Board, a physical Plaza object capable of displaying up to three active events without requiring players to dig through menus.
Photo Mode has received a fairly substantial overhaul too. Up to 12 images can now be saved, completed DreamSnaps remain available through a six-month archive, three submissions can be permanently pinned and QR sharing codes last for seven days. An Emote Wheel launches with 11 free emotes that can be used outside Photo Mode, while DreamSnaps adds two daily Super Votes that allow both displayed submissions to receive a vote.
Apple Arcade players get a different version of several of these systems.
Haunting Elegance will become the first Star Path offered through the Apple Arcade Edition when it arrives later in October. Unlike the standard version, its Star Paths have no Premium Track, Premium Rewards, Moonstones or purchasable Tokens. Daily Duties replace the regular weekly structure, with Milestone Rewards providing consumables such as Dreamlight, Star Coins and Potions instead.
The Event Board and permanent Astronomer’s Journey are also absent from Apple Arcade for now and will instead arrive with the game’s next free update. The Premium Shop remains unavailable on that edition.
Other improvements tucked away in the patch notes include cleaner character positioning on the world map, an indicator showing which direction the Avatar is facing, quicker access to favourite Fast Travel points and the first Villager House Skin, beginning with Snowy Beast’s Castle. Gameloft has also rebalanced parts of the game’s economy, including the costs associated with Realms and Villager houses.
Season of Scares is live across Disney Dreamlight Valley now, but its headline character is deliberately being saved for the end of October. For anyone primarily interested in Oogie Boogie, the date that really matters is 4 November: start his first quest before then and the rest of his storyline can be finished without the Halloween deadline hanging over it.
