Key Highlights:

  • Call of Duty: WWII can currently be added to a UK PlayStation account for free without a PS Plus subscription.
  • Only the standard PS4 edition is free, while the Gold Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition and Season Pass remain paid.
  • Sony and Activision have not announced the giveaway or provided an end date, with Mafia III also unexpectedly appearing free at the same time.

Unexpectedly dropping to £0 today, Call of Duty: WWII can currently be added to a UK PlayStation account without a PS Plus subscription, with Sony’s own Store showing the standard PS4 edition as Free and offering an Add to Library button.

The UK PlayStation Store listing confirms the offer is for the base game rather than a trial. There is currently no expiry date displayed alongside the free edition.

The standard edition of Call of Duty: WWII is currently listed as Free on the UK PlayStation Store (Sony Interactive Entertainment)

There is an important catch when finding it.

The Store page also contains the Gold Edition at £54.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition is currently £29.74 after a 65% discount. Anyone automatically taken to one of those versions needs to switch editions and select the plain Call of Duty: WWII entry displaying Free.

The Season Pass is not included either. It remains separately listed at £39.99, with individual expansion packs such as The Resistance still carrying their own prices. The free base game nevertheless contains the Campaign, Multiplayer and original Nazi Zombies experience.

Call of Duty: WWII is a PS4 release, but it can also be played on PS5 through backward compatibility. Sony notes that some functionality available on PS4 may be absent when running it on PS5.

Claiming the game itself does not currently require PlayStation Plus, but online multiplayer is a separate matter. Sony still lists PS Plus as required for online play, with multiplayer supporting up to 18 players. The single-player campaign therefore remains usable without subscribing after the game has been added to the account.

That makes this quite different from when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III joined PS Plus in July. That game was a Monthly Game entitlement tied to an active subscription, whereas the current WWII Store page presents the standard edition as an ordinary £0 library claim.

This is not Call of Duty: WWII’s first appearance through PlayStation’s free-game ecosystem either. Sony previously offered it as one of the June 2020 PlayStation Plus Monthly Games, alongside Star Wars Battlefront II.

The timing is particularly strange because WWII is not the only former PS Plus game doing this today.

Mafia III is also currently listed as Free on the UK PlayStation Store with an Add to Library option. Its Definitive Edition remains £25, while the base game’s DLC Content Pack and individual story expansions including Faster, Baby!, Sign of the Times and Stones Unturned are separately listed as free.

Mafia III was itself a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game back in August 2018. Having two older PS4 games that were previously supplied through Plus suddenly appear as ordinary free Store listings on the same day is notable, although there is currently no evidence establishing why it has happened.

Availability is also inconsistent outside the UK.

Reports indicate successful claims across several European countries and India, while other regions have either continued displaying a price or produced checkout errors. The US Store, for example, was still charging $59.99 for Call of Duty: WWII when the unexpected free listings began appearing.

Some users have also encountered a PlayStation backend error referring to an invalid pricing SKU when attempting to complete a £0 transaction. That adds further uncertainty over whether this is a deliberate regional promotion or an unintended Store pricing change.

Neither Sony nor Activision has announced a Call of Duty: WWII giveaway at the time of writing, and the free standard edition does not display the type of closing date normally attached to a PlayStation Store promotion.

I think the absence of an expiry date is the detail that makes this worth treating cautiously. The Store is unquestionably offering the game for £0 in the UK right now, but that does not prove Sony intended it to become permanently free or guarantee that an unexpectedly issued licence could never be changed later.

What is clear is that there is still interest in Sledgehammer’s 2017 shooter. Call of Duty: WWII was the ninth most-downloaded PS4 game in Europe during August 2026, nearly nine years after its original release. It also placed tenth on the equivalent US chart.

For anyone who missed the game when it previously appeared through PlayStation Plus, the current listing creates another opportunity without needing an active subscription to make the claim.

How long that opportunity will remain available is the part Sony has not explained.
