Key Highlights:

  • EA Sports officially confirmed the Fight Night comeback on 20 October 2026, following the last release in 2011.
  • The announcement arrives just a month after reports that an earlier Fight Night reboot had been cancelled.
  • No release date, platforms, developer or playable boxer roster have been announced.

EA Sports has officially confirmed that its Fight Night boxing series is making a comeback, ending a 15-year wait since Fight Night Champion launched in 2011. The surprise announcement finally gives boxing fans confirmation that the long-dormant franchise has a future.

On 20 October 2026, the publisher launched the comeback through its official EA Sports Fight Night account on X, posting a short message:

The accompanying teaser features red boxing gloves hanging above an empty ring, alongside the words “The fight is never over.” However, EA has not revealed gameplay footage, a release window, supported platforms or the development studio responsible for the revival.

The timing is particularly interesting because the franchise appeared to have suffered another setback just weeks earlier.

In September, GLN reported that EA had reportedly cancelled its previous Fight Night reboot plans. According to Insider Gaming, the project had progressed beyond pre-production before its original plans were abandoned around 2025, following several development pauses dating back to 2021.

Crucially, that report also suggested the cancellation might not spell the end of Fight Night. Sources indicated that EA’s change of ownership could open the door to a completely new boxing project.

The official announcement now confirms the franchise is returning, although EA has not clarified whether the upcoming game is a fresh project or retains any work from the previously cancelled reboot.

EA’s ownership is another relevant development. On 4 August 2026, the company completed its $55 billion acquisition by a consortium consisting of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in professional boxing, making the return of Fight Night an interesting development under the new ownership. However, EA has not officially connected the revival to those boxing investments or identified who is leading the project.

The original Fight Night series produced five games between 2004 and 2011, featuring legendary boxers including Muhammad Ali, Roy Jones Jr. and Mike Tyson. Fight Night Champion was the final instalment, introducing a cinematic story campaign centred on Andre Bishop alongside its traditional boxing modes.

Having played Fight Night Champion extensively, I still believe its biggest achievement was how naturally it combined realistic boxing mechanics with accessible controls. In my Fight Night Champion Xbox Series X review, I awarded the game 9.5/10, particularly praising its counter-punching, stamina management and memorable Champion Mode.

Those are the qualities I would want a new Fight Night to preserve, although EA has yet to confirm whether any of the original gameplay systems or modes will return.

The announcement also raises questions about boxer licensing. Unlike UFC, where fighters compete under a central promotion, professional boxing involves separate agreements with individual fighters and rights holders. Licensing complications were previously reported as one of the obstacles facing the franchise, and no fighters have been confirmed for the comeback.

Meanwhile, the community has continued keeping Fight Night Champion alive through projects such as Fight Night Forever, a free fan-made overhaul that adds modern boxers including Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, alongside updated visuals and gameplay adjustments.

Fight Night Forever is not an official EA Sports release, but its continued development highlights the appetite for a modern boxing experience built around the original game’s mechanics.

EA has not announced when its next Fight Night update will arrive. The next major milestone will be confirmation of the new game’s identity, platforms and development plans.
