Key Highlights:

  • Four rulesets at launch: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay PvP will be available when WoW Forever launches on 4 November 2026.
  • Hardcore arrives later: Blizzard has confirmed a separate Hardcore ruleset, but no release date has been announced.
  • Playing with friends: Players must choose the same ruleset and faction to group together, join guilds and complete dungeons or raids.

World of Warcraft: Forever launches on 4 November 2026 with four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay PvP. Hardcore will arrive after launch.

Instead of selecting a traditional realm, players choose a ruleset that determines their gameplay environment, including open-world PvP, roleplaying expectations and who they can play alongside.

The decision matters because characters cannot freely move between rulesets. Players hoping to explore Azeroth with friends should agree on their ruleset and faction before creating their characters.

What Are Rulesets in WoW Forever?

Rulesets replace traditional realm selection in World of Warcraft: Forever, dividing players into larger communities based on their preferred style of gameplay.

Each ruleset operates as its own player ecosystem. Although Blizzard describes WoW Forever as realmless, players in different rulesets cannot ordinarily group together for dungeons, raids or questing.

Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay PvP are available at launch. Hardcore is planned for a later date.

Normal: Best for Exploration and Questing

Normal allows players to focus on quests, exploration and cooperative gameplay without constantly facing attacks from opposing players.

PvP remains available for those who choose to participate, but it does not dominate the experience.

For returning players who want to rediscover familiar locations, experiment with classes or enjoy Azeroth at their own pace, Normal is the most accessible starting point.

PvP: Best for Open-World Faction Conflict

PvP places greater emphasis on conflict between the Horde and Alliance.

Players are almost always at risk of being attacked by opposing faction characters, making travel and questing less predictable.

This ruleset also has an important character-creation restriction. Players who create an Alliance character cannot subsequently create a Horde character within the same PvP ruleset, and vice versa.

Blizzard plans to use faction-balancing measures that may temporarily restrict character creation when one faction becomes too heavily populated.

For players who enjoy spontaneous battles and the tension of contested territory, PvP offers a more dangerous journey.

Roleplay: Best for Character Stories and Immersion

Roleplay is designed for players who want to experience Azeroth through the identity of their characters.

Stricter naming conventions and behavioural expectations help support a community focused on storytelling and immersion.

Unlike the PvP ruleset, Roleplay allows characters from both factions to be created, although Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together.

This makes Roleplay an appealing option for players who enjoy Warcraft’s world, lore and social interactions.

Roleplay PvP: Best for Storytelling With Faction Conflict

Roleplay PvP combines roleplaying conventions with the danger of open-world PvP.

Players can develop their characters and participate in an immersive community while facing the possibility of attacks from opposing faction members.

Blizzard added Roleplay PvP to the launch lineup following community feedback, confirming its availability for 4 November.

For players who want faction rivalries to become part of their character’s story, this offers a different experience from standard Roleplay.

Hardcore: Best for High-Stakes Challenges

Hardcore will arrive after WoW Forever’s launch, although Blizzard has not announced a specific release date.

The ruleset is intended for players who want character death to carry lasting consequences.

Hardcore will operate within a separate ecosystem, with restrictions designed to prevent progression earned elsewhere from being transferred into it.

However, Blizzard has confirmed that a Hardcore character who dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.

This gives players a way to continue with a fallen character outside Hardcore, rather than losing access to it entirely.

But can you play with friends on different rulesets? No. Players must choose the same ruleset to group together, complete dungeons and participate in raids.

Faction choice matters too. Horde and Alliance characters cannot group together, even when they belong to the same ruleset.

Players planning to join the same guild should coordinate both their ruleset and faction before creating characters.

Battlegrounds are an exception to the separation between rulesets, as they may include players from different rulesets. Hardcore remains separate.

For example, if one friend creates an Alliance character on Normal and another chooses Alliance on PvP, they will not be able to quest or complete dungeons together using those characters.

This makes choosing a ruleset a practical decision, rather than simply a preference for PvP or roleplaying.

Players cannot freely transfer existing characters between rulesets.

Anyone wanting to experience a different ruleset will generally need to create another character there.

Hardcore provides a specific exception: characters who die can move to another ruleset, including PvP.

Blizzard has also confirmed that Collections and Legacy Points are shared across standard rulesets. Hardcore has additional restrictions, with progression earned outside Hardcore unable to flow into its separate ecosystem.

WoW Forever allows players to select a preferred online language without choosing a separate language-specific realm.

The setting can be found under Game Menu → Options → Languages and Social → Preferred Online Language.

This preference applies across characters on the account and has a 24 hour cooldown before it can be changed again.

It offers another way for players to find others with similar preferences without needing to select a traditional server.

Which WoW Forever Ruleset Should Returning Players Choose?

For returning players primarily interested in exploration, questing and rediscovering Azeroth, Normal is likely the most comfortable starting point.

PvP is better suited to those who enjoy faction conflict, while Roleplay offers a community focused on character identity and storytelling. Roleplay PvP combines both approaches.

Hardcore will eventually provide a separate challenge for players willing to accept greater consequences for death.

When I first played World of Warcraft, I spent hours exploring as a Blood Elf, travelling between unfamiliar locations and following quests simply to discover where they would lead.

Even after reaching the point where I could join my friends for group content, I often preferred exploring independently. I continued playing through Mists of Pandaria, and discovering the world remained one of my favourite parts of the experience.

For that reason, Normal or even Roleplay would be my personal choice when returning to WoW Forever.

However, anyone planning to play regularly with friends should prioritise agreeing on a ruleset and faction together. Choosing PvP or Roleplay might change the experience, but selecting different rulesets could prevent them from adventuring together at all.

With the WoW Forever beta now concluded, players have only a short time to decide which ruleset best suits their preferred experience before launch.

World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on 4 November 2026 at 11pm GMT in the UK, with Hardcore following at a later date.
