Overwatch 2 – What’s the Story Behind Hero Mastery Mode Delay

Sorry to rain on your Overwatch parade, but Blizzard has put the brakes on the much-anticipated Hero Mastery mode for Overwatch 2. This feature, originally set to make a grand entrance with the upcoming season, is taking a detour and won’t arrive until the mid-season patch in September. The team is determined to deliver a stellar experience and will take the time necessary to make this a reality.

Overwatch 2 has had a rocky ride since the announcement of the PvE mode’s downsizing and transformation into a paid extra. This caused quite a ruckus amongst the community, who were eagerly anticipating its debut this August. Coupled with Hero Mastery mode, this PvE addition was poised to tackle the dreaded queue time issues by promoting hero diversity and rewarding those brave enough to step out of their comfort zones.

Overwatch 2: Season 6 Update Amidst Hero Mastery Mode Delay

Regrettably, this silver bullet solution has been postponed. A recent post from Blizzard delved into the present status of Overwatch 2, spilling the beans about the delay. While Story Missions will roll out at the dawn of Season 6, Hero Mastery will sit on the bench until September.

The developers’ drive to polish the Hero Mastery mode is at the heart of this delay. While they work on optimising the experience, the rest of Season 6 remains on track, with an array of content to keep players entertained. Flashpoint, for instance, is set to stir up the PvP scene, whilst PvE story missions remain highly anticipated, despite the clouds of controversy.

The upcoming season will not be short of actions for gamers with Invasion story missions available for squads of four to conquer at their convenience after forking out £15 or £40 bundles. The lower-priced pack includes 1,000 Overwatch coins and an exclusive Legendary skin for Sojourn. The pricier one boasts the coin bundle, Legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko, and The Null Sector Premium Battle Pass with 20 Tier skips. Access to Season 6’s PvE content will require an Invasion Bundle purchase.

Despite the bumps in the road, Blizzard continues to steer Overwatch 2 towards its upcoming season, beginning August 10th, while assuring players that the wait for Hero Mastery mode will be worth it. Let’s hope they’re right!

For now, Overwatch 2 is available to play on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
