EA has just blown the lid off the rumour mill, officially declaring a solo Black Panther adventure is in the pipeline. This could very well be the next feather in Marvel’s gaming cap, given the franchise’s recent golden run in the arena.

Marvel’s Black Panther: EA’s Golden Ticket?

When we talk about solo Marvel endeavours, few have soared as high as Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man. This web-slinging sensation broke all kinds of records, notably overtaking God of War’s initial UK week sales with the PC remastered version back in the summer of 2022.

By spring 2023, Sony’s bean counters were dancing, with 1.5 million copies shifted and $52 million in the bank. With this kind of performance, it’s safe to say the anticipation for future solo titles is simmering nicely. However, all eyes are now on EA to see how they handle the multi-platform approach they are so well known for.

In a recent press statement, EA made it clear that a single-player, third-person Black Panther escapade is in the works. The reins have been handed to their fresh-faced Seattle studio, Cliffhanger Games. Leading the charge is none other than Kevin Stephens, former head honcho at Monolith Productions, adding weight to earlier whispers of an open-world Black Panther game being in EA’s secret lair.

Stephens is keen to promise fans “an authentic, no-holds-barred Black Panther adventure,” that will give players “unprecedented narrative control.” However, EA is keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to launch dates or platforms.

Interestingly, Black Panther isn’t the only Marvel hero in EA’s roll-call. A year ago, EA and Marvel shook hands on a three-game deal which included Iron Man, and now, of course, Black Panther.

While Cliffhanger Games takes a stroll through Wakanda, EA Motive will be donning the iconic Iron Man suit. Details on the Iron Man title are just as scarce as the Black Panther game, aside from the studio confirming they have already hit the ground running. In addition to these two heavy-hitters, EA has teased another Marvel title, but the details remain shrouded in mystery.

We’re going to have to sit tight for a while before we can get our hands on Black Panther or Iron Man. However, Marvel fans won’t have to twiddle their thumbs for long. Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 is primed for an October 20 launch, closely followed by Marvel’s Wolverine, rumoured for a grand reveal in late 2024. All signs point to the next few years being a veritable treasure trove for Marvel gaming fans.

For now, all we know is that Cliffhanger Games’ Black Panther is busy in the development den.
