Key Highlights:

  • The upcoming Black Panther game from EA’s new studio Cliffhanger Games is likely to be an open-world experience, according to a job listing.
  • Open-world superhero games have had mixed results in the past, so fans will expect Cliffhanger to deliver a high-quality, diverse open world in Wakanda.
  • In addition to Black Panther, EA is also working on games for other Marvel superheroes, including Iron Man, which could mean the Black Panther game may not get a sequel.

The Promise of an Open-World Black Panther Game

Marvel fans have exciting news to look forward to, as Electronic Arts has revealed that its highly anticipated Black Panther video game will feature an expansive open-world setting.

The game, which is being developed by EA’s newly established Cliffhanger Games studio, looks set to deliver a truly immersive experience for players.

The open-world nature of the game was hinted at in a recent job listing posted by EA, which sought a “Principal Sandbox Designer” to help craft the “rich, sandbox environment” of the Black Panther title.

This suggests the game will eschew a more linear structure in favour of a fully realised open world, likely set within the technologically-advanced nation of Wakanda.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” said Cliffhanger Games boss Kevin Stephens when the project was first announced last year.

Open-world superhero games have had a mixed track record in the past, with titles like Insomniac’s acclaimed Spider-Man and Arkham titles were praised for their immersive open worlds, others like Gotham Knights were criticised for generic, padded open-world content.

Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League has also been heavily criticised for generic, repetitive open-world content.

As such, fans will be hoping that Cliffhanger Games can deliver a truly engaging and diverse open world that does justice to the rich setting of Wakanda.

EA’s Ambitious Plans for Marvel-Based Titles

This Black Panther game is just one of several Marvel-based titles in development at EA, with the publisher also working on games centred around characters such as Iron Man and vampire slayer Blade.

However, the open-world approach sets the Black Panther project apart, potentially offering players a more immersive and exploratory experience compared to more linear superhero adventures.

The shadow king was recently revealed to play a big part in the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The superhero was heavily featured in the trailer and even fights fellow Avenger Captain America at the closing stages.

With the latest entry still in the relatively early stages of development, details remain limited.

EA and Marvel Games have yet to provide a concrete release window, suggesting the title is likely still a few years away.

But for now, the prospect of an expansive open-world Black Panther experience has fans eagerly anticipating what Cliffhanger Games has in store.
