Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently revealed that the Warcraft franchise will have the biggest reveals and most new content unveiled at the company’s upcoming BlizzCon event in November. This suggests Warcraft fans will not want to miss what’s shown for the World of Warcraft universe at the convention.
BlizzCon has long served as Blizzard’s premiere convention for announcing new games and expansions across its portfolio of titles. Set for November 3-4 in Anaheim, California, this year’s BlizzCon will be the first in-person gathering since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to a fan on Twitter concerned that Warcraft was allotted less floor space than other Blizzard IPs based on the BlizzCon layout diagram, Ybarra clarified that the combined area for World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft Rumble, and the Darkmoon Faire collectively adds up to the largest of any individual game hall. He stated unambiguously that Warcraft has the biggest news planned for the event.
The return of Chris Metzen to Blizzard as Warcraft’s creative director fueled expectations that the franchise would be a centrepiece of this BlizzCon. A new World of Warcraft expansion seems inevitable, alongside updates for WoW Classic. Per the convention map, Hearthstone will also showcase something new. And Warcraft Rumble likely releases around BlizzCon. Safe to say the convention will be momentous for Warcraft devotees.
However, fans of Diablo and Overwatch should still find plenty to excite them as well. Details are scarce regarding Diablo 4’s presence, but Overwatch 2 will reveal a new tank hero and host its World Cup tournament. Meanwhile, StarCraft disappointingly appears absent from the gaming event this year based on current information.
In many ways, this BlizzCon represents a critical juncture for Blizzard’s future. It’s the company’s first in-person convention following lawsuits and controversies stemming from past events. And all of its key gaming universes face challenges presently. With unsold tickets for the first time ever, Blizzard surely recognises the importance of knocking this BlizzCon out of the park to start regaining goodwill.
If the early word from Mike Ybarra is any indication, Blizzard looks poised to come out swinging for redemption with Especially with the return of popular creative leads like Metzen, expectations will be high for this gaming event to re-capture what once made the company so revered. While every franchise has something to prove, all eyes will be on Warcraft to lead the charge as promised.
