Reports indicate Sony’s acclaimed studio Naughty Dog has undergone layoffs, with The Last of Us multiplayer spinoff rumored to be now inactive.

The Sony-owned developer, home to around 400 staff, has apparently laid off at least 25 workers. Most affected are quality assurance contractors seeing their positions terminated early. Per reports, full-time employees remain unaffected currently.

Naughty Dog will allegedly not provide severance to laid off staff, who are said to be working until October’s end. Sources claim ND employees are pressured to stay silent on events. Sony has yet to comment publicly.

Last of Us Multiplayer Spinoff Dormant But Not Dead

Insider rumors suggest the online spinoff is now essentially dormant, though not outright canceled. This echoes earlier reports questioning the project’s quality and long-term viability, leading to reduced staffing while Naughty Dog reevaluates direction.

When initially addressing development struggles in May, the company stated:

“We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our Last of Us multiplayer game.”

They added:

“Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.”

Future of Other Titles Now Up in the Air

Naughty Dog’s last release was the PC port of The Last of Us Part 1 in March, suffering mixed reception over performance issues. Though their next project remains unconfirmed, a Part 3 or entirely new IP are rumored.

Little is known of the stalled Last of Us online game, though early concepts highlighted ND’s focus on narrative depth and strong gameplay. Its future now seems uncertain.

Layoffs are an unfortunate industry reality even at prestigious studios like Naughty Dog. But fans await official word on how corporate restructuring may impact highly anticipated titles going forward. ND’s unmatched pedigree has set high expectations they now must manage during this transitional period.
