The Sims 4 For Rent Expansion Introduces Landlord Roleplay and Tropical Setting

A highly anticipated new expansion is on the way for the popular life simulation game The Sims 4. Titled “For Rent”, this expansion pack launching on December 7th will give players the opportunity to try their hand at being virtual landlords.

For the first time in the strategy game’s history, you’ll be able to build and manage multi-family residential lots such as apartments, duplexes and townhouses. Take on the role of landlord by renting out properties to NPC tenants, or play as a renter yourself and experience all the highs and lows of rental living.

Landlords – New Duties and Tenant Relationships

As a landlord, you’ll need to perform property inspections, handle maintenance issues and collect rent payments to earn an income. However, you’ll also face challenges like burst pipes, broken appliances, insect infestations and mold outbreaks.

Your tenant relationships will be key – fail to keep properties in a livable condition and you may face revolts or other backlash. You’ll need to strike the right balance between maximising profits and keeping tenants happy.

Renters – Coping With Realistic Issues

On the renter side, your Sims will deal with relatable rental problems like electrical faults, leaky ceilings and appliance breakdowns. A new “eviction anxiety” moodlet can kick in if you fall behind on rent.

You’ll need to stay on your landlord’s good side to avoid conflicts or even eviction. But if issues arise, you can call in a repair service or take matters into your own hands with DIY upgrades.

Tropical Tomarang World

Alongside the main renting gameplay, For Rent introduces an all-new world called Tomarang with Southeast Asian inspirations. The developers describe it as a “scenic tropical landscape and vibrant city skyline.”

It presents exciting new build and customisation opportunities, from bustling city apartments to beachfront bungalows. Expect plenty of lush greenery, warm lighting and cultural touches throughout.

Five New Personality Traits

When creating your Sims for this rental-focused expansion, you’ll have access to five fresh traits to better match their personalities.

These include:

• Generous – Your Sim is kind and giving to others
• Nosy – A curious, gossip-loving busybody
• Cringe – Lacking self-awareness and prone to embarrassment
• Wise – An Elder Sim full of sage advice
• Child of the Village – Connected to Tomarang traditions

The Child of the Village trait relates specifically to growing up in the new world. But the other four can be applied more broadly for all-new characterisation opportunities.

Pre-Order Bonuses

If you’re sold on stepping into the landlord or tenant role, pre-orders are now open ahead of the December 7th launch.

All players who purchase the For Rent expansion from November 2nd through January 18th will receive the Street Eats Digital Content pack. This adds BBQ grills, fruit stands and other night market items to recreate Tomarang culture.

Fans of the series tend to get more excited about expansion content rather than the standard DLC drops like The Poolside Fashion Kit that was released in September.
