  • Large size likely due to expansive story mode, textures, game modes
  • Crossplay confirmed between PlayStation, Xbox and PC
  • Crossplay allows fighting against others on different platforms

With the launch of the hotly anticipated fighting sequel Tekken 8 just days away, key details have emerged regarding file size requirements and cross-platform functionality for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

PS5 Version 80GB, Smaller Than 100GB on PC

According to details surfaced by @PlaystationSize on social site X, installing Tekken 8 on PS5 will require approximately 80GB of available storage space. This is notably smaller than the PC edition, which clocks in at a beefy 100GB. The reason for the disparity is unclear, but likely relates to compression optimisations by Bandai Namco for the PlayStation release.

Players can begin preloading the PS5 version starting January 23rd ahead of Tekken 8’s January 26th launch. The Xbox Series X/S file size remains unconfirmed, but expected to land between 80-100GB.

As a visually stunning AAA fighting game pushing current-gen boundaries, the large storage requirements make sense. The expanded story mode, detailed 4K character models and textures, as well as robust game modes all contribute to the install footprint.

For reference, other recent fighting games like Street Fighter 6 demanded a similarly gargantuan 60GB on PC. So Tekken 8’s appetite for disk space is par for the course.

Crossplay Confirmed in Tekken 8

In a huge benefit to multiplayer longevity, Tekken 8 will support crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Director Katsuhiro Harada explicitly confirmed this key feature was in the works all the way back in April 2023, stating “Of course I will.”

Closed beta testing in October 2023 further validated crossplay functionality across platforms, allowing testers to face off against friends on other systems. While matchmaking and connectivity proved convoluted during the beta, Harada’s team has likely smoothed out the process since.

Cross-platform multiplayer support represents a huge step forward for the fighting game genre. No longer fractured along hardware lines, players on PS5, Xbox and PC will unite as one global player pool.

This massively expands the potential opponents available at any time, ensuring healthy online activity and swift matchmaking. Crossplay is now a standard feature players expect, and this latest entry meets demand.

However, some voiced concerns during beta that PC players exhibited gameplay advantages over console fighters. If true skill gaps based on hardware persist post-launch, the community may request console-only crossplay options to level the playing field.

Regardless, top-tier players will continue rising above the rest and cementing legacies across platforms. Crossplay or not, legends like Knee and JDCR will remind everyone exactly why they are the best on earth.

Exciting Future for Fighting Games

With genre leaders like Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 embracing crossplay in 2024, Tekken 8 upholding the trend cements cross-platform unity as the new norm moving forward. This connectivity can only help the fighting game community grow even stronger.

Just a couple of days ago, the devs revised their accessibility filters due to health concerns for the upcoming title. This shows that Bandai Namco listen to the community and that this latest entry is here to stay.

The Beat ’em up’s crossplay capabilities may not be revolutionary at this point, but exemplify the exciting direction of the genre. If file size proves the only barrier to entry, Bandai Namco will deliver a classic ready to satisfy fans across PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
