Key Highlights:

  • It includes an all-new standalone campaign focusing on Shadow the Hedgehog and his origins.
  • The game will launch across consoles and PC this autumn, ahead of the next movie.

Classic and Modern Sonic Return Alongside New Shadow Campaign

Longtime mascot Sonic the Hedgehog is set to return in a new game title from Sega called Sonic X Shadow Generations. The platformer will feature both classic 2D and modern 3D Sonic gameplay, alongside an all-new standalone campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog.

This latest entry brings together the best elements of past Sonic games over the years. Iconic stages from titles like Sonic Generations will be remastered and expanded with upgraded visuals for modern consoles.

While the remastered stages and gameplay for Classic and Modern Sonic will appeal to longtime fans, the big new addition is a full campaign focused on Shadow the Hedgehog. Players will be able to explore Shadow’s mysterious backstory and motivations in a way never seen before.

Shadow first appeared alongside Sonic in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2. He was created to be the ultimate lifeform, boasting incredible speed and strength. The dark anti-hero has appeared in numerous games since his debut, often crossing paths and rivaling the gaming icon.

Sonic X Shadow Generations will dive deeper into Shadow’s history. His gameplay sections seem inspired by his own 2005 solo game, with darker city environments.

Sega officially revealed Sonic X Shadow Generations during the recent PlayStation State of Play stream. The announcement confirmed the game will launch this autumn for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The brief teaser trailer showcased the fast-paced platforming gameplay the series is known for across both 2D and 3D levels. A visual upgrade is clear compared to previous entries.

To celebrate the announcement, Sega is adding a Shadow skin to the recent Sonic Superstars racing game starting February 15th.

Arrives Ahead of New Sonic Movie

The timing of Generations coincides with the theatrical release of the third Sonic the Hedgehog film in December. The movie is set to introduce Shadow as a character, so the video game provides a perfect opportunity for fans to become more familiar with the blue hedgehogs dark rival prior to the film.

Generations continues Sega’s recent efforts to revitalise the classic mascot after well-received titles like Sonic Mania and the best-selling Frontiers. The addition of a fully-fledged Shadow campaign adds an intriguing new wrinkle into the tried-and-true formula.

Platformer fans can look forward to speeding through stages as both versions of Sonic and the enigmatic Shadow when the game launches across consoles and PC later this year.
