Sonic Frontiers has managed to surpass the previous sales records of the most popular 3D Sonic game of all time in just seven months, taking the crown for itself. Sega recently revealed the game’s growing sales numbers in March, and this announcement has come shortly after. Indicating that the title continues to exceed the company’s expectations.

Following Sega’s acquisition of Rovio Entertainment, the creator of Angry Birds, both companies held a press conference discussing the benefits of the purchase. While this presentation may be irrelevant to many gamers, Sonic Frontiers’ sales figures were mentioned, indicating its importance.

The presenter discussed how the acquisition will assist in growing both Sega and Rovio’s intellectual properties, and after 17 minutes into the presentation, it was revealed that the iconic blue hedgehog’s latest adventure had sold 3.5 million units, 500,000 more than what was reported two months ago.

Interestingly enough, these new sales numbers were reported after the release of the title’s’ first free DLC update in late March, indicating that the new content may have persuaded potential buyers who were on the fence previously.

The milestone Sonic Frontiers has achieved is significant because the first proper multi-platform 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic Heroes, was known for selling 3.41 million copies at the end of 2007, making it the franchise’s best-selling 3D title. Despite the success of Sonic Generations and the Wii-exclusive Sonic Colours, Heroes held its position for 16 years. The latest title has now surpassed it in record time, making it the second best-selling 3D title after a long run at the top.

Sonic Frontiers’ Free DLC Updates and Growing Sales Numbers

The game’s sales figures hold significant implications for both Sega and fans of the legendary blue hedgehog. Devoted fans of the series can rest easy knowing that it has established a solid footing in the open-world presentation utilised in Frontiers, something that many players enjoyed despite its flaws. Sonic Team’s ability to deliver exceptional experiences when given sufficient time and care is evident, as Sega can attest to with the year-long delay of the title, ensuring it was an excellent product.

Despite the record-breaking sales, Sonic Frontiers is far from finished. Two free DLC updates are still scheduled to be released later this year, with the second wave expected to arrive in late June for the series’ 32nd anniversary.

If these free updates for all players truly correlate with these growing sales numbers, then the third update should help Frontiers achieve even higher success before the year’s end. The third DLC plans to introduce a new story and a few new playable characters. Likely resulting in a few last-minute sales from fans who have wished to play as more than just the gaming icon himself for several years.

The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
