The popular platforming game Sonic Frontiers has received a major new update that adds playable characters Tails, Amy, and Knuckles for the first time in a 3D Sonic title since 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog. The characters can be used in a new story expansion that imagines an alternate ending to the main game’s climax.

In the new downloadable content entitled The Final Horizon, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles attempt to change their fate before the final boss fight of Sonic Frontiers. The story takes place on a new island that unlocks after finishing the original game. Trailers for the update show the fan favourite characters in action, utilising their unique abilities.

Fans have been delighted to once again take control of Tails’ flying, Amy’s hammer, and Knuckles’ climbing after many years of the abilities being absent from 3D entries. However, some amusing gameplay quirks have also been discovered, like Knuckles being able to jump infinitely high.

This new story expansion marks the final major update for Sonic Frontiers after its release last November. Previous post-launch updates added a jukebox, photo mode, more challenges, improved movement mechanics, and a spin dash ability.

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has said that the open zone format of Frontiers will likely be the template for future 3D Sonic games rather than returning to strictly linear 3D platforming.

While support for the title is now complete, Sega will continue the Sonic gaming celebrations in March with the launch of Sonic Superstars. It’s a side-scrolling multiplayer platformer that brings back the classic 2D gameplay style which we’ve covered quite a bit on this site.

Early impressions of the DLC have been positive, with fans of the characters happy to see Tails, Amy Rose, and Knuckles return to 3D in prominent roles. Their abilities add more gameplay variety to the open zones. Sega has delivered a significant content update as a farewell to Frontiers.

Story Expansion Offers Alternate Ending

The new playable characters offer the game’s fans nostalgia and fresh experiences both at once. And the alternate ending provides motivation to jump back into the expansive islands and colourful open world. For those who already completed the game, it’s a chance to experience it all again from a new perspective and playstyle.

After years of absence from 3D games, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles finally have a chance to shine and show off their signature moves in stunning new environments. Fans hoped for more story focus and screen time for them, and this update delivers exactly that.

While the iconic blue hedgehog will always be the frontrunner, expanding play to his familiar friends brings welcome novelty without sacrificing the speed and momentum that defines the Blue Blur. Their special abilities complement Sonic’s core gameplay nicely rather than overshadowing it.
