Fallout: London Mod Seeks Bethesda’s Aid for Console Release

Fallout London to Consoles

Key Highlights:

  • Fallout: London mod aims for console release, needs Bethesda’s support.
  • PC version faces distribution challenges due to its massive size.
  • Developers hope for 2024 release despite recent setbacks.

The ambitious Fallout: London project, a fan-made mod for Fallout 4 that’s grown to rival the size of a standalone game, is pushing forward with its PC release.

However, the team behind this mammoth undertaking is now setting its sights on console platforms, provided they can secure crucial support from Bethesda.

Project lead Dean Carter recently shared insights into the mod’s development and future plans in an exclusive interview with Metro.

Carter expressed a strong desire to bring Fallout: London to console players, but emphasised that this would require direct communication with key decision-makers at Bethesda.

“What we want is to speak to a decision-maker,” Carter explained.

“If we could make [Fallout: London] a standalone thing with their permission, that means that people on gaming consoles could use it, which they currently can’t.”

Distribution Hurdles: PC Version Faces Size Limits

The sheer scale of Fallout: London presents unique challenges for distribution, even on PC.

The mod is so expansive that it exceeds the file size limits of both Bethesda’s in-game mod platform and the popular Nexus Mods site.

To overcome this hurdle, the team has partnered with GOG to host the mod, treating it almost like an official game release.

For console versions of Fallout 4, which have a limited selection of mods available, accommodating Fallout: London would require Bethesda to make significant exceptions to their current mod size restrictions.

This underscores the need for direct collaboration between the mod team and Bethesda’s higher-ups.

Team Folon have been very busy as of late, they recently revealed that they plan to launch their very own game studio in the near future. Although, with this latest hurdle, perhaps that may be put on the back-burner for now.

Setbacks and Persistence: Navigating Next-Gen Updates

The road to release hasn’t been smooth sailing for the team at Team Folon. Recent next-gen updates to Fallout 4, implemented without prior warning, have caused frustration and delays.

As a result, PC players will need to downgrade their version of Fallout 4 to remove the next-gen update for the mod to function properly.

This limitation means the mod will only be available to those who purchased Fallout 4 through Steam and GOG, as the Epic Games Store doesn’t allow for such downgrades.

Despite these setbacks, the team remains committed to delivering their vision of a post-apocalyptic London to fans. While an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, they’re hopeful for a 2024 launch.

Fallout: London promises to be more than just a typical mod. Built using Fallout 4 as a framework, it offers an entirely new game experience set in the iconic British capital.

The project’s ambition and scale have garnered significant attention from the community, with many eagerly anticipating the chance to explore this fresh take on the beloved post-apocalyptic universe.

As development continues, all eyes are on Bethesda to see if they’ll extend a helping hand to bring this fan-made creation to a wider audience on consoles.

For now, PC players can look forward to venturing into the irradiated streets of London in what promises to be one of the most extensive Fallout mods ever created.
