Dead Island 2, the long-troubled sequel to the original 2011 zombie slasher, is now free on the Epic Games Store.
From now until May 22nd at 4PM BST, anyone with an Epic account can permanently add the game to their library – no catches, no subscription requirements.
It’s a generous offer as part of Epic’s ongoing MEGA Sale.
After years stuck in development limbo, cycling through multiple studios and creative resets, Dead Island 2 finally launched in 2023 to generally favourable reception.
While it didn’t rewrite the rulebook, critics praised the game’s core loop and its technical execution, particularly the FLESH (Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids) technology that dynamically simulates dismemberment and gore.
Set in a quarantined Los Angeles overrun by the undead, players control one of several “Slayers,” each with unique skill sets. You’re not just immune to the virus, you’re stronger because of it. The game doesn’t shy away from violence or humour, delivering a tone that leans into over-the-top zombie horror.
Core Gameplay and Replayability
At its core, Dead Island 2 is a first-person action RPG. Players explore districts of “Hell-A,” scavenging weapons, upgrading gear, completing side missions, and slicing through hordes of zombies.
Weapon customisation plays a central role. Items like batteries, blades, and even car parts can be strapped to blunt weapons to electrify, ignite, or poison enemies.
The campaign supports up to three-player co-op, turning Los Angeles into a playground for coordinated zombie slaughter.
Additionally, a horde mode lets players test their loadouts against escalating waves of undead.
Not Included but Not Ignored: DLC and Expansions
While the free version includes the full base game, the two paid expansions Haus and SoLA are not included.
However, they are currently on sale for 30% off.
These add new locations, story missions, enemy variants, and weapons.
Together, they expand the Dead Island 2 sandbox into even more unhinged territory, and are worth considering if the core game hooks you.
To claim the game, simply log in to your Epic Games Store account, locate Dead Island 2, and hit ‘GET.’ Once redeemed, the title is yours permanently, even after the offer expires.
This freebie also comes with another lesser-known horror title, Happy Game, available until the same deadline.
If you’re into psychological horror or quirky indie experiences, it’s worth checking out too.
Giving away a recent AAA release like Dead Island 2 is a notable move by Epic. It offers players who may have skipped the game at launch a reason to dive in now, especially with a growing catalogue of post-launch content and polish.
For those who already own the game on another platform, the PC version could offer visual or modding perks. For newcomers, it’s simply one of the best deals of the year.
