Spyro: A Realm Beyond Launches Spring 2027 With Toys for Bob Returning

Key Highlights:

  • Spyro: A Realm Beyond launches in Spring 2027, new trailer drops.
  • Toys for Bob has confirmed full dragon flight and the return of Tom Kenny.
  • The first original Spyro game in nearly 20 years is coming to Xbox, PlayStation, Switch 2, and PC.

After nearly two decades, Spyro is finally returning in an all-new adventure.

Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond marks the first original mainline Spyro game since 2008 and reunites the beloved purple dragon with developer Toys for Bob, the studio behind the acclaimed Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Launching in Spring 2027, the game will release for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam, while also being available through Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere.

In an interview following the reveal, Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan explained that the team had dreamed of creating a completely new Spyro adventure ever since completing the Reignited Trilogy.

“We are huge Spyro fans ourselves, Ever since then, we’ve been dreaming of what an original new adventure would look like, and that dream has manifested in Spyro: A Realm Beyond.”

The reveal trailer offered fans their first look at Spyro’s updated appearance. According to Yan, the team worked closely with developers from the original games and evolved the Reignited design rather than reinventing the character.

One noticeable change is Spyro’s larger wingspan, which reflects perhaps the biggest gameplay evolution in the series’ history.

For the first time, Spyro will be capable of unrestricted flight.

While previous games limited players to gliding and dedicated flying stages, A Realm Beyond introduces full dragon flight as part of Spyro’s core abilities. Toys for Bob describes the mechanic as “active” flight, allowing players to seamlessly switch between charging across the ground and soaring through the skies.

The world itself has been designed around that freedom, with exploration and discovery remaining central to the experience.

Yan stressed that colourful environments, hidden treasures, quirky characters, and the sense of exploring every corner of the world remain fundamental to what makes a Spyro game special.

Fans will also be pleased to hear that Tom Kenny is returning to voice Spyro once again. His portrayal of the dragon in the Reignited Trilogy helped define the modern version of the character, and Yan believes his youthful energy is an essential part of Spyro’s personality.

Although Spyro: A Realm Beyond retains the joyful and whimsical tone of previous entries, the story appears to carry slightly higher stakes. The trailer teased a mysterious new villain who will challenge Spyro and push him to grow emotionally throughout the adventure.

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and Toys for Bob has reassured fans that one classic series staple hasn’t gone anywhere.

Yes, sheep will still be present.

I have to admit, giving Spyro full flight feels like the natural evolution fans have imagined for years. The original games always hinted at that fantasy, but technology and design limitations prevented it from becoming a core feature. If Toys for Bob can deliver on that promise while preserving the charm and exploration that made the series beloved, A Realm Beyond could become Spyro’s most ambitious adventure yet.

After years of rumours and countless fan campaigns, the little purple dragon is finally back.
