In a move certain to delight devoted fans of the iconic purple dragon, Microsoft has announced the addition of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy to the Xbox Game Pass library.
Beginning today (12th November), subscribers across Standard, Ultimate, and PC tiers will be able to explore the vibrant Dragon Realms and embark on Spyro’s classic adventures.
The Reignited Trilogy, initially released in 2018 by Toys For Bob, it features ground-up remakes of the original Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon titles.
Offering updated controls and improved hit detection, the remakes aimed to closely replicate the original mechanics while enhancing gameplay fluidity, allowing new and returning players to experience Spyro’s classic charm with a fresh polish.
In the first instalment, players join Spyro on a quest to rescue his dragon brethren, who have been crystallised by the villainous Gnasty Gnorc.
Across the colourful realms, the plucky protagonist must collect gems, vanquish foes, and master the art of gliding, charging, and breathing fire to restore his draconic companions.
The second instalment, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, sees Spyro journeying to the land of Avalar to defend it from the villainous sorcerer Ripto. This entry adds new allies and powers, expanding Spyro’s skill set with abilities like swimming and climbing.
It introduced collectibles with real in-game impacts, such as orbs that unlocked new abilities, alongside expanded narrative content delivered through cutscenes and more character-driven interactions.
In Year of the Dragon, Spyro must retrieve stolen dragon eggs and face new threats with the help of characters like Sheila the Kangaroo and Agent 9, adding a layer of gameplay variety.
The minigames, such as skateboarding challenges and shooting galleries, would later become fan favourites.
A Growing Catalogue of Classics on Xbox Game Pass
This long-awaited addition to the Xbox Game Pass catalogue comes after months of speculation, as the service has steadily welcomed a growing number of Activision Blizzard titles in recent months.
Industry insiders accurately predicted the arrival of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, following the introduction of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2.
Interestingly, this isn’t the Purple Dragon’s first appearance on a subscription model; he was previously featured on PlayStation Plus in mid-2021, marking his resurgence as a cross-platform icon
