Key Highlights:
- Hogwarts Legacy players can claim the Astronomer’s Hat for free until September 30, 2026.
- The cosmetic was previously tied to selected Amazon pre-orders, making it unavailable to most players for more than three years.
- The hat is now listed as free DLC on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox, although the base game is still required.
Hogwarts Legacy has made the Astronomer’s Hat available to all players for free, removing the cosmetic’s long-standing retailer exclusivity as part of this year’s Back to Hogwarts celebrations.
The giveaway runs from August 31 until September 30, 2026. Players need to visit the Hogwarts Legacy store page on the platform where they own the game, open its add-ons and claim the Astronomer’s Hat before the promotion ends.
The item is currently listed as free downloadable content on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. Steam records the DLC as releasing on August 31, while the UK PlayStation Store and Xbox storefront list it from September 1 because of regional storefront timing.
The Astronomer’s Hat is a purple pointed hat decorated with gold stars, but its significance comes from how difficult it previously was to obtain.
It originally appeared as a retailer-specific pre-order bonus through selected Amazon stores when Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023. Contemporary pre-order guides listed the hat as an Amazon-exclusive cosmetic, while players continued reporting it as one of the few appearance items they could not obtain through normal play long after launch.
Retailer and platform-specific bonuses were a recurring part of the original launch period, with the Hogwarts Legacy Switch pre-orders also including their own additional incentive ahead of that version’s release.
That made the Astronomer’s Hat an unusual holdout even after Warner Bros. Games began opening up other previously restricted Hogwarts Legacy bonuses.
The 2024 update made content including the Onyx Hippogriff Mount, Felix Felicis Potion Recipe, Haunted Hogsmeade Shop Quest and several cosmetics more widely available. The Astronomer’s Hat did not join them at the time and remained tied to its old Amazon distribution.
I think that history makes this giveaway considerably more useful to long-term players than the cosmetic itself might suggest, particularly for anyone who has been trying to complete the game’s Additional Content appearance collection.
The giveaway gives returning players another reason to revisit the RPG, shortly after the community-made Chamber of Secrets mod added an entirely new explorable dungeon beneath Hogwarts.
Claiming it does not require completing a quest or reaching a particular point in the story. Players simply need to add the free DLC to their account through their platform’s digital storefront before the deadline.
On Steam, the Astronomer’s Hat appears as a standalone free DLC entry and requires the Hogwarts Legacy base game to use. The Xbox Store similarly lists it as free content requiring the game separately.
The future of the franchise also sits within a much bigger corporate shift, with GLN previously covering the Netflix and Warner Bros. deal that includes Warner Bros. Games and the Hogwarts Legacy IP.
The giveaway comes shortly after Warner Bros. Discovery formally acknowledged a second Hogwarts Legacy game in its latest shareholder material. The company referred to the project as the “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy”, but has not announced its final title, platforms or release date.
For now, players returning to the original game have until September 30 to add one of its formerly restricted cosmetics to their collection without needing the Amazon pre-order that originally unlocked it.
