Key Highlights:
- Writer Haris Orkin says the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem story DLC will expand Oswell E. Spencer’s character arc.
- Orkin previously worked with Capcom on Resident Evil Village’s Shadows of Rose expansion.
- A 2027 release has been suggested, but Capcom has not confirmed a date.
Writer Haris Orkin has revealed that the upcoming story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem will explore Oswell E. Spencer’s character arc, before admitting that he probably should not have shared the information.
Speaking during an interview with Distance NERDing at Meadowlark Comic Con, Orkin confirmed he is currently working on the expansion alongside Capcom. While discussing his approach to writing villains, he explained that antagonists generally see themselves as the heroes of their own stories.
Orkin used Victor Gideon as an example before turning his attention to Spencer, one of the founders of the Umbrella Corporation.
“We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem,” he explained, adding that “in the DLC you will understand it even further.” He then acknowledged that he probably should not have revealed that particular detail.
The comment provides the clearest indication yet of where Capcom intends to take the expansion’s story. Spencer has been central to Resident Evil’s history since the original game, although Requiem presents a more complicated picture of the man responsible for establishing Umbrella.
Minor story spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem follow.
Previously portrayed as a ruthless figure obsessed with controlling human evolution, Spencer was killed by Albert Wesker in events shown in Resident Evil 5. Requiem revisits his legacy through a storyline that introduces regret and the possibility of redemption into his motivations.
I think this is where the expansion has an opportunity to do something genuinely interesting. Spencer’s apparent change of heart raises questions about how his later decisions fit with the character established across earlier Resident Evil games. Further developing those motivations could help Capcom reconcile both portrayals.
There is another interesting connection here. Orkin previously wrote the script for Resident Evil Village’s Shadows of Rose expansion, collaborating with Capcom’s Japanese development team. He confirms that experience in his professional game credits, alongside his subsequent work on Requiem.
Capcom first announced additional story content in March, when director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed that the team intended to explore Requiem’s world further. The publisher has already delivered other post-launch additions, including the free Leon Must Die Forever mode, which later received balance improvements in update 1.3.1.
The story expansion remains a separate project.
During the later part of his interview, Orkin also suggested that the DLC would probably arrive next year, pointing towards 2027 as a possible release window rather than a confirmed launch date.
He also described working closely with Capcom using gameplay footage and, at times, early playable builds to help shape dialogue around the game’s scenes and character interactions.
For now, Capcom has not revealed the expansion’s playable characters, setting, price or official release window. Orkin’s remarks establish that Spencer’s story will receive further attention, but they do not confirm a return to Spencer Mansion or that Spencer himself will be playable.
