Key Highlights:
- Insomniac Games narrative director Ben Arfmann has discussed the possibility of telling more Spider-Man stories beyond the upcoming sequel.
- Senior writer Lauren Mee hopes players finish Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 wanting to see what happens next.
- James Stevenson has hinted at a post-credits scene, although another Spider-Man game has not been announced.
Insomniac Games has hinted at the possibility of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, with members of the development team discussing future stories and a potential post-credits scene ahead of the October 20 PS5 release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Speaking in a September 15 interview with io9, narrative director Ben Arfmann was asked whether the upcoming sequel might establish storylines for future Spider-Man games.
Arfmann expressed enthusiasm about continuing the series but declined to reveal what Insomniac might have planned beyond the current project.
Advanced senior writer Lauren Mee also discussed the team’s ambitions, explaining that the goal was for players to finish the sequel wanting more of the story.
She said:
“finish the game and go, ‘Holy sh*t. I need more of this.'”
The clearest hint came from Insomniac director of community and marketing James Stevenson, who suggested there might be a post-credits scene. Arfmann followed by describing the sequel as a Marvel experience.
Neither developer confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and their comments leave open whether any potential continuation would take the form of another full game or a different project.
However, Insomniac has already established a precedent for carrying unresolved storylines between games.
The original Marvel’s Spider-Man revealed Harry Osborn undergoing secret treatment inside a containment tank, where a mysterious black substance was visible. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales continued that storyline by showing Harry awakening while Norman Osborn ordered his release.
Those scenes established Harry and the symbiote as important unresolved elements heading into the sequel, although Harry’s identity as Venom remains unconfirmed ahead of launch.
What interests me most about Stevenson’s comment is that Insomniac has previously used its closing scenes to establish major story developments, making another post-credits tease particularly significant.
For now, the developers are keeping their attention on Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they confront Kraven the Hunter, Venom and the wider threat facing New York City.
Later update: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ultimately included two post-credits scenes that established possible directions for another instalment. Norman Osborn visits the imprisoned Otto Octavius, who hints at a mysterious final chapter, while a separate scene introduces Cindy Moon, known as Silk in Marvel Comics.
These developments provide a much clearer indication of Insomniac’s future storytelling possibilities, but they do not constitute an official announcement of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. Our Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ending and post-credits explanation examines both scenes and their implications.
