The Anniversary Edition introduces a host of new features and improvements:
- Online Multiplayer: Up to six players can engage in cross-generation battles, allowing PS4 and PS5 owners, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series players, to compete together.
- Visual Upgrades: The game now supports modern aspect ratios, custom screen filters, and enhanced HD graphics options.
- Control Optimisation: Fully optimised controller support for all consoles ensures smooth gameplay.
- Achievement System: Players can now earn Achievements and Trophies as they progress.
- Interactive Museum: An in-game exhibit charts the history of the Worms series, featuring exclusive developer interviews.
- Game Boy Colour Version: A fully playable port of the original Game Boy Colour release is included.
- UI Overhaul: A complete redesign of the user interface across all platforms enhances user experience.
- New Save System: An improved save feature allows for better game progression management.
Team17 emphasises that while “worm warfare never changes,” this edition has undergone a “larval glow up” with added content for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
One of the most interesting features of the Anniversary Edition is the inclusion of a fully playable Game Boy Colour port. The original Worms Armageddon never released on the Game Boy Colour; however, Team17 developed this version specifically for handheld audiences in the early 2000s.
Its inclusion as a hidden gem in the Anniversary Edition allows newer players to see how the Worms experience was adapted for portable devices, a rare treat for retro game enthusiasts.
The port also demonstrates the franchise’s broad appeal across multiple platforms, having originally spanned consoles, PCs, and handhelds during the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Collector’s Edition and Memorabilia
For collectors, a special Collector’s Edition will be available from December 3rd for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch platforms. This package includes:
- The Anniversary Edition game
- A double-sided collectible anniversary coin
- Worms stickers
- A Weapons & Utilities Guide booklet
- A double-sided poster
- Three exclusive pins
The inclusion of three exclusive pins in the Collector’s Edition is part of a growing trend among video game publishers who seek to create physical merchandise that appeals to collectors.
For die-hard Worms followers, the pins represent iconic elements from the series, such as the Holy Hand Grenade and Concrete Donkey, two of the most famous weapons from the game. These collectibles appeal to nostalgic players who grew up with the franchise, adding extra value for those who treasure physical game-related memorabilia.
As players dive into the revamped battlefields, they can expect the same zany humour and strategic depth that made the original a classic, now enhanced for the modern gaming landscape.
The Worms Armageddon Anniversary Edition is available now on PC and all current-gen consoles, inviting players to relive or discover the joy of annelid annihilation.
