General Shao is Outworld’s powerful military commander in Mortal Kombat 1’s New Era. He fights with a massive battle axe that can be planted and recalled, giving him separate attacks depending on whether the weapon is in his hands.
This guide covers all of General Shao’s Mortal Kombat 1 finishers, including Spin Cycle, Axe-ident, the Bear Necessities Animality, and every Brutality. Each section provides platform-specific inputs, Input Distance requirements, unlock methods, Final Hits, and Additional Conditions.
How to Perform General Shao’s First Fatality in MK1 (Spin Cycle)
Input Distance: Jump Distance
Execution Difficulty: Easy
- PlayStation: ⬅️➡️⬇️⬜
- Xbox: ⬅️➡️⬇️🅧
- Nintendo Switch: ⬅️➡️⬇️🅨
General Shao launches his opponent into the air with his axe before leaping after them and grabbing one arm. He spins the victim around at extreme speed, stripping away their flesh before slamming the remaining skeleton into the ground.
Spin Cycle uses the same Front Punch input across all three platforms, with only the controller button changing.
How to Perform General Shao’s Second Fatality in MK1 (Axe-ident)
Input Distance: Jump Distance
Execution Difficulty: Easy
- PlayStation: ⬇️➡️⬅️⬜
- Xbox: ⬇️➡️⬅️🅧
- Nintendo Switch: ⬇️➡️⬅️🅨
General Shao drives his axe into the ground and launches his opponent upwards. He catches them by the legs, drops their body onto the exposed blade, and pulls them through the axe until they are split vertically in half.
Axe-ident and Spin Cycle both work from Jump Distance, making General Shao’s two Fatalities unusually consistent in their positioning requirements. The game’s simpler move databases label both as Mid-Range, while the current detailed 2026 finisher guide defines that working position as Jump Distance.
Important: General Shao can also perform the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Winter Fatalities if they are unlocked on the player’s account. These seasonal Fatalities are not unique to General Shao and can be performed by other playable fighters.
How to Perform General Shao’s Animality in MK1 (Bear Necessities)
Input Distance: Sweep Distance to Full Screen
Execution Difficulty: Easy
- PlayStation: ⬅️⬇️⬇️🅾️
- Xbox: ⬅️⬇️⬇️🅑
- Nintendo Switch: ⬅️⬇️⬇️🅐
General Shao transforms into a battle-scarred bear and mauls his opponent with its claws. The bear clamps its jaws into the victim, violently thrashes them around, and finishes by crushing their head with a final bite.
Bear Necessities trades General Shao’s battle axe for raw physical power, making the transformation a natural match for one of Mortal Kombat 1’s strongest fighters. The Animality works from Sweep Distance through to Full Screen.
For the animal transformation used by every other playable fighter, see our complete Mortal Kombat 1 Animality guide.
All General Shao Brutalities in Mortal Kombat 1
General Shao has The Klassic and four Brutalities unlocked through Fighter Mastery. Is That Your Best?, Feel My Power, Don’t Make Me Laugh, and It’s Official…You Suck! unlock at Mastery Ranks 3, 5, 10, and 15.
Unlike most base-roster fighters, General Shao does not unlock a Brutality at Fighter Mastery Rank 7. That rank awards 1,000 Koins instead. All Too Easy is an additional Brutality now present in the current game, while Clean Cut and Wait For It! were added later alongside the Khaos Reigns-era finisher additions.
The Klassic
Unlock Requirement: Available by default
- PlayStation: ⬇️ + 🔺
- Xbox: ⬇️ + 🅨
- Nintendo Switch: ⬇️ + 🅧
Final Hit: Uppercut
Additional Condition: Hold Back Punch during the Final Hit.
General Shao performs an Uppercut that decapitates his opponent with an upward swing of his axe.
Brutality Variation: Perform The Klassic while General Shao is in No Axe Stance to trigger a secret alternate animation. Instead of using the axe, Shao removes the opponent’s head with a double-fisted uppercut.
Is That Your Best?
Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 3
- PlayStation: L1 or ⬜ + 🅧
- Xbox: LB or 🅧 + 🅐
- Nintendo Switch: L or 🅨 + 🅑
Final Hit: Might Makes Right (Back Throw)
Additional Condition: Press Down three times during the Final Hit. General Shao must be wielding his axe.
General Shao throws his opponent into the air before cutting off their head with his axe. He follows with another swing that slices the falling head apart.
The axe requirement is essential. Attempting the same Back Throw while General Shao is in No Axe Stance leads to a different Brutality instead.
Feel My Power
Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 5
- PlayStation: L1 or ⬜ + 🅧
- Xbox: LB or 🅧 + 🅐
- Nintendo Switch: L or 🅨 + 🅑
Final Hit: Might Makes Right (Back Throw)
Additional Condition: Press Up three times during the Final Hit. General Shao must be in No Axe Stance.
Without his axe, General Shao repeatedly punches the opponent in the face until the front of their head is destroyed.
Is That Your Best? and Feel My Power use the same Back Throw input, but the active stance and directional condition determine which Brutality can activate.
All Too Easy
Unlock Requirement: No Fighter Mastery rank
- PlayStation: ⬅️ + ⬜, 🔺
- Xbox: ⬅️ + 🅧, 🅨
- Nintendo Switch: ⬅️ + 🅨, 🅧
Final Hit: Axe Splitter
Additional Condition: Hold Front Punch during the Final Hit. General Shao must be wielding his axe.
General Shao completes Axe Splitter by driving his weapon down through the opponent and cutting their body vertically in half.
Note: All Too Easy is an unusual addition because General Shao’s Fighter Mastery progression still awards 1,000 Koins at Rank 7 rather than this Brutality. The finisher was absent from the original usable set but is included in current finisher databases.
Don’t Make Me Laugh
Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 10
- PlayStation: ➡️ + 🔺, L1 or ⬜ + 🅧
- Xbox: ➡️ + 🅨, LB or 🅧 + 🅐
- Nintendo Switch: ➡️ + 🅧, L or 🅨 + 🅑
Final Hit: You’re Weak
Additional Condition: Hold Down during the Final Hit.
General Shao completes You’re Weak by impaling the opponent with his axe. He lifts the victim before forcing the blade down through their body and splitting them open from the head towards the waist.
Because the Throw input forms the final part of the You’re Weak Kombo, the entire sequence must connect before the held Down condition can trigger the Brutality.
It’s Official…You Suck!
Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 15
- PlayStation: ⬇️⬅️🅾️
- Xbox: ⬇️⬅️🅑
- Nintendo Switch: ⬇️⬅️🅐
Final Hit: Death Quake
Input Distance: At least Jump Distance
Additional Condition: Hold Back during the Final Hit.
General Shao slams his axe into the ground with Death Quake. The resulting impact destroys the opponent’s lower legs and sends the rest of their body crashing down.
It’s Official…You Suck! is the only General Shao Brutality with a documented minimum Input Distance, so standing too close prevents it from activating even when Death Quake delivers the Final Hit.
Seasonal Store Brutalities
General Shao received two additional Brutalities alongside the Khaos Reigns-era finisher additions. Clean Cut and Wait For It! were presented through the Seasonal Store rather than General Shao’s Fighter Mastery progression.
Clean Cut
Unlock Requirement: Seasonal Store
- PlayStation: 🔺, 🔺, 🔺
- Xbox: 🅨, 🅨, 🅨
- Nintendo Switch: 🅧, 🅧, 🅧
Final Hit: Glory In Kombat
Additional Condition: Hold Forward during the Final Hit.
General Shao completes Glory In Kombat before using the final axe swing to cleanly remove his opponent’s head.
Clean Cut uses a simple three-hit Back Punch Kombo, with holding Forward during the closing strike as the only additional execution condition.
Wait For It!
Unlock Requirement: Seasonal Store
- PlayStation: ➡️ + ⬜, 🔺, 🔺
- Xbox: ➡️ + 🅧, 🅨, 🅨
- Nintendo Switch: ➡️ + 🅨, 🅧, 🅧
Final Hit: Direct Orders
Additional Condition: Hold Front Punch during the Final Hit.
General Shao completes Direct Orders and knocks his opponent backwards before throwing his axe through their body. The weapon returns to his hand and cuts through the victim again on its way back.
The complete Kombo must connect before the held Front Punch condition can activate Wait For It!.
General Shao Fatalities and Brutalities Video Guide
The video guide demonstrates General Shao’s Fatalities, Fighter Mastery Brutalities, later Brutality additions, and hidden variations.
Watching each finisher can help confirm the required stance, Input Distance, Final Hit, and timing for any Additional Condition.
In Mortal Kombat 1’s New Era, General Shao is closely connected to Reiko, his fiercely loyal second-in-command, and Sindel, the Empress whose army he commands. Baraka also has a direct connection to Shao through Outworld’s military and political conflict, placing the Tarkatan leader within the same broader power struggle. Across the wider Mortal Kombat series, Shao shares a long-standing association with Shang Tsung. You can explore our Reiko, Sindel, Baraka, and Shang Tsung finisher guides for their Fatalities, Animalities, and Brutalities.
