How Does the Ranking System Work in Resident Evil 4 Remake?

Resident Evil 4 Remake Ranking System, GLN Knowledge bottom centre.

The ranking system in Resident Evil 4 Remake grades a completed campaign primarily by how quickly you finish it. Assisted, Standard, Hardcore and Professional each have their own completion-time thresholds for A, S and S+ ranks, while slower runs receive a B rank.

Unlike ranking systems that score accuracy, enemies defeated or resources collected, Resident Evil 4 Remake does not combine multiple performance statistics into a final campaign grade. Your finishing time determines the rank, with additional restrictions applying when attempting an S+ run.

What Determines Your Final Rank?

Campaign rank is based primarily on your final completion time

Completion time determines your final campaign rank in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The game records the total elapsed time of a playthrough and compares it against the threshold for the selected difficulty. Finishing within progressively shorter limits raises the resulting grade from B to A, S or S+.

Your rank is not directly improved by:

  • Killing more enemies
  • Achieving higher accuracy
  • Taking less damage
  • Collecting more treasure
  • Completing Merchant Requests
  • Using fewer healing items
  • Conserving ammunition

Those actions can still influence how efficiently you complete the campaign, but they are not separate scoring categories in the ranking calculation.

This makes the system fundamentally different from a traditional performance score. A careful playthrough with excellent accuracy can still receive a lower rank if it takes too long, while a faster run can achieve a high rank despite leaving enemies, treasures and optional objectives behind.

What Are the Rank Requirements?

Each difficulty uses a different completion-time threshold.

Each difficulty has its own time requirements for A, S and S+ ranks

S and S+ therefore share the same time target on each difficulty.

The distinction between them is not a faster S+ threshold. S+ changes the conditions under which that time must be achieved.

How Does S+ Rank Work?

S+ is the highest completion rank and must be earned from a fresh New Game.

For Assisted, Standard and Hardcore, the player must start without carrying over equipment from a completed save and finish within that difficulty’s S-rank time limit.

That means:

  • Assisted S+: complete a New Game within 4 hours.
  • Standard S+: complete a New Game within 5 hours.
  • Hardcore S+: complete a New Game within 5 hours 30 minutes.
  • Professional S+: complete a New Game within 5 hours 30 minutes and save no more than 15 times.

This fresh-start requirement changes the purpose of S+ considerably. An ordinary S rank demonstrates that the campaign was completed quickly, while S+ requires the same pace without relying on a New Game Plus inventory.

Bonus weapons and accessories that have already been unlocked are not automatically prohibited from an S+ attempt. This is separate from specific Challenges that explicitly require Professional difficulty to be completed without bonus weapons.

Can You Get S+ Rank in New Game Plus?

No. New Game Plus cannot award an S+ rank in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

A completed save can still be used to earn A or S ranks, but S+ requires a new playthrough rather than a continued one.

This matters because New Game Plus carries Leon’s weapons, upgrades, money and much of his inventory into another campaign. Those advantages can dramatically reduce completion time, so the S+ system removes them by requiring the run to begin from New Game.

The result is a useful distinction within Resident Evil 4 Remake’s replay structure:

S rank measures completion speed. S+ measures completion speed from a fresh campaign.

Professional adds one further restriction.

How Does Professional Rank Differ?

Professional uses the strictest version of the ranking system.

Its A-rank requirement falls to seven hours, while both S and S+ require completion within five hours and 30 minutes.

Professional S+ also imposes a maximum of 15 manual saves across the entire playthrough.

Professional S+ limits the player to 15 manual saves

The restriction is especially significant because Professional removes autosaving. Typewriters therefore become both safety points and a limited resource during an S+ attempt. Using a save too early can leave fewer opportunities to protect progress during more difficult sections later in the campaign.

The 15-save limit applies specifically to Professional S+. Assisted, Standard and Hardcore S+ runs are not subject to the same manual-save restriction.

What Does the Ranking System Unlock?

Campaign ranks are also connected to Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Challenge and Extra Content systems.

Several unlock conditions require completing the game at a particular difficulty and rank. Examples include:

  • Ashley Armour for earning at least an A rank on Hardcore or higher.
  • Chicago Sweeper for earning at least an A rank on Professional.
  • Deer Antlers for earning an S+ rank on Standard.
  • Chicken Hat for earning an S+ rank on Hardcore.
  • Cat Ears for earning an S+ rank on Professional.

These rewards create a progression loop across repeated playthroughs.

Completing one ranking challenge can unlock equipment or accessories that make later challenge runs more manageable. The ranking system therefore functions as more than an end-screen grade. It is one of the mechanisms Capcom uses to structure Resident Evil 4 Remake’s long-term replay progression.

Does Dying Affect Your Rank?

Dying does not carry its own ranking penalty, but the time lost can still affect the final result.

Because campaign rank is based on completion time, anything that causes the timer to increase can indirectly make a higher rank harder to reach.

This distinction is important. The game is not evaluating whether Leon died during the playthrough as a separate performance attribute. What matters is whether the completed run still falls inside the required time threshold.

The same principle applies throughout the ranking system. Combat, exploration, Merchant use and optional objectives matter only insofar as they affect the efficiency of the overall playthrough.

That simplicity is what makes Resident Evil 4 Remake’s ranking system unusually transparent once its rules are understood. The final grade does not attempt to judge every decision Leon made along the way. It measures how quickly the campaign was completed, then applies additional eligibility conditions when the player is pursuing S+.
