The healing system in Resident Evil 4 Remake uses consumable recovery items to restore Leon’s current health and Yellow Herb mixtures to permanently increase his maximum health. Green Herbs, mixed herbs, First Aid Sprays, eggs, fish and vipers can restore health, while Red and Yellow Herbs modify the effects of other herbs rather than functioning as normal healing items on their own.
Healing and maximum-health progression are therefore related but separate mechanics. Restoring health repairs damage Leon has already taken, while increasing maximum health expands how much damage he can survive in the future.

How Does Health Recovery Work?
Health recovery restores part or all of Leon’s depleted health bar without changing its maximum capacity.
Most recovery items are consumed directly from the Attaché Case. A Green Herb restores a small amount of health, while stronger items and herb combinations restore progressively larger amounts.
First Aid Sprays provide the simplest form of recovery because a spray restores Leon’s health completely regardless of how much health is missing.
Food items such as chicken eggs, Black Bass and vipers can also be consumed for health. These function as recovery items despite having no connection to the herb-combination system.
The amount healed and Leon’s maximum health should therefore be treated as two different attributes:
Recovery amount → restores lost health
Maximum-health increase → enlarges the health bar permanently
An item can affect one without affecting the other.
What Do Green, Red and Yellow Herbs Do?
Green, Red and Yellow Herbs each perform a different role in Resident Evil 4 Remake’s healing system.
A Green Herb is the base healing herb. It can be consumed alone to restore health or combined with other herbs to create stronger recovery items.
A Red Herb increases the restorative effect of Green Herbs. Red Herbs cannot be consumed by themselves, so their value comes from modifying another herb mixture.
A Yellow Herb permanently increases Leon’s maximum health when included in a usable herb mixture. Yellow Herbs also cannot be consumed on their own.
This creates a simple functional hierarchy:
| Herb | Primary Function | Usable Alone? |
|---|---|---|
| Green Herb | Restores current health | Yes |
| Red Herb | Increases healing potency | No |
| Yellow Herb | Increases maximum health | No |
Red and Yellow Herbs are therefore modifiers rather than standalone healing items.
What Are All the Herb Combinations?
Resident Evil 4 Remake allows several herb combinations, with each mixture changing either recovery strength, maximum health or both.
| Combination | Effect |
|---|---|
| Green | Restores a small amount of health |
| Green + Green | Restores twice as much health as one Green Herb |
| Green + Green + Green | Restores three times as much health as one Green Herb |
| Green + Red | Restores almost three times as much health as one Green Herb |
| Green + Yellow | Restores the equivalent of one Green Herb and increases maximum health |
| Red + Yellow | Increases maximum health without the normal Green Herb recovery effect |
| Green + Green + Yellow | Restores twice the health of one Green Herb and increases maximum health |
| Green + Red + Yellow | Restores almost three times the health of one Green Herb and increases maximum health |
The Green + Red + Yellow mixture combines both branches of the healing system. It provides strong immediate recovery while also permanently increasing Leon’s health capacity.
The existence of Red + Yellow is particularly useful for understanding the system. Green is not technically required for a Yellow Herb to increase maximum health. A Red and Yellow mixture can be consumed for the permanent health increase even though neither herb is usable individually.
How Do Yellow Herbs Increase Maximum Health?
Consuming a mixture containing a Yellow Herb permanently expands Leon’s maximum health bar.
The increase remains for the rest of the playthrough rather than disappearing after the current encounter or chapter.
Yellow Herbs are consequently progression resources as well as recovery items. Finding and consuming them gradually increases Leon’s survivability across the campaign.
The amount of maximum health gained can also depend on the mixture containing the Yellow Herb. This makes combining herbs relevant beyond simply creating a stronger heal.
Once Leon’s maximum health reaches its limit, additional Yellow Herb mixtures no longer provide further permanent health progression. They can still retain recovery or resale value depending on the mixture.
CAPCOM recognises reaching this limit as a progression milestone through the My Body is a Temple Challenge, awarded for increasing maximum health to its maximum level.
Can Rhinoceros Beetles Increase Health?
Yes. Rhinoceros Beetles provide a second, hidden method of increasing Leon’s maximum health in Resident Evil 4 Remake.
Consuming a Rhinoceros Beetle permanently increases maximum health in a similar way to a Yellow Herb effect.
The beetles are unusual because they also have substantial monetary value. Each one can instead be sold to the Merchant for 10,000 Pesetas.
That creates a direct trade-off between two progression systems:
Consume Rhinoceros Beetle → permanent health increase
Sell Rhinoceros Beetle → additional Pesetas
Rhinoceros Beetles are also extremely easy to overlook because they are not presented like ordinary herb pickups. Three are hidden across the main campaign, with one associated with each major region: the Village, Castle and Island.
They are not required to reach Leon’s maximum possible health if enough Yellow Herbs are used, making their economic value a legitimate alternative to consuming them.
What Other Items Can Heal Leon?
Leon can restore health using several non-herb recovery items.
These include:
- First Aid Sprays
- White Chicken Eggs
- Brown Chicken Eggs
- Black Bass
- Large Black Bass
- Vipers
First Aid Sprays provide full recovery, while food items restore different amounts of health.
Unlike mixed herbs, food cannot be combined into stronger recovery items. Its main advantage is immediate consumption without using Green, Red or Yellow Herbs.
Several food items also have competing uses.
Vipers, for example, can be sold to the Merchant and are required for the Viper Hunter Merchant Request. Fish can similarly be consumed or sold, while the unique Lunker Bass is associated with the Catch Me a Big Fish Request.
That means a recovery item’s value is not determined solely by how much health it restores. Inventory space, Merchant value and optional objectives can all influence whether consuming it is worthwhile.
Can Charms Improve Healing?
Yes. Several Attaché Case charms directly increase the amount of health restored by specific recovery items.
Notable healing-related charms include:
| Charm | Healing Effect |
|---|---|
| Ashley Graham | +50% health recovery from Green Herbs |
| Leader Zealot | +10% health recovery from Green Herbs |
| Black Bass | +100% health recovery from Black Bass |
| Chicken | +100% health recovery from all egg types |
| Don Pedro | +40% health recovery from vipers |
| Isabel | +30% health recovery from vipers |
The Green Herb pre-order charm also provides an additional recovery bonus to Green Herbs for players who have access to it.
These effects make charms part of the healing system even though charms are managed through the Attaché Case system.
A Green Herb, egg, fish or viper therefore does not always have a fixed practical value. Its effectiveness can change depending on Leon’s currently equipped charms.
Should You Sell or Use Recovery Items?
Recovery items can have both survival value and monetary value, so using them is not always automatically the best choice.
The Merchant buys herbs, mixed herbs, food and other recovery items for Pesetas.
This becomes particularly relevant when Leon is already carrying enough healing supplies or has reached maximum health. A Yellow Herb mixture that can no longer increase maximum health, for example, may be more useful as a healing reserve or something to sell.
The Rhinoceros Beetle charm adds another layer to this decision by increasing the resale value of recovery items by 100%.
With that charm equipped, the relationship becomes:
Recovery Item → consume for survivability OR sell for increased economic value
Resident Evil 4 Remake’s healing system therefore feeds directly into its broader resource economy. Health, inventory space and Pesetas compete for value throughout a playthrough rather than existing as completely separate systems.
What Happens When Leon Reaches Maximum Health?
Once Leon reaches the maximum health limit, he cannot permanently increase his health bar any further during that playthrough state.
Yellow Herb mixtures can still be consumed if they provide healing, but the maximum-health component no longer increases Leon’s health capacity.
Reaching the limit completes CAPCOM’s My Body is a Temple Challenge.
Maximum health also carries into New Game Plus along with Leon’s other retained progression. Players therefore do not need to rebuild the health bar from its starting level every time they continue from a completed save.
